Month two of our 44th season here on Bailey Island.

It is beautiful here......flowers out, grass is green, sun is out....after a week plus of rain, drizzle, fog and gray skies.

I thought it may be fun to explain why we named our nine rooms.

The Wiseman room was named after the gentleman we bought the building from in 1979. John Wiseman of Lewiston owned the original building and used it as a summer home. The trophies on the walls of the dining room are all his. He was a very successful businessman.

The York room is named after my sons, Matt and Adam York. When we opened as a restaurant in 1980, we lived upstairs over the kitchen for a few years. The little sitting room was Adams bedroom, and the kitchen area was Matts bedroom.

The Merriconeag is named after the body of water that all of the rooms look out at. I had wanted to name the restaurant that, but my Dad convinced me that no one would be able to pronounce it, or spell it! And back in 1980, we relied on phone books to look up places!

The Sunset room is named obviously after the Sunset....which when the weather cooperates, all of the rooms have superb views of our very varied and beautiful sunsets.

The Westview is named because all of the rooms have a westerly view. By the way, when we were a restaurant, the Westview room was our bakery and prep kitchen.

The Mt Washington room is named after the mountain in New Hampshire, which on a clear day we can see. It is almost 90 miles from here in a straight line. During the summer, the sun sets almost directly behind it.

Casco Bay is named after the large Bay that surrounds our island. Supposedly there are 365 islands in Casco Bay, known as the Calendar islands.

The Blue fin room is named after the Blue fin tuna, that is often caught in our area. For years the island has hosted a Tuna tournament. And, there is a Blue fin mounted on the wall in the dining room.

And finally, the Harpswell room is named after the town we are part of. Bailey Island, Orrs Island, Great Island, Cundys Harbor and South Harpswell are all part of the town of Harpswell.

So, that is how they were named. Guests seem to have their favorite rooms for various reasons. The nice thing is that they all have a great view! We still have a few openings. If you haven't reserved yet give us a call!

Hope you are all well!

Sue

The Log Cabin Teamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12731703183930916084noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5233368187838836318.post-50197476123932204952022-09-05T06:23:00.000-07:002022-09-05T06:23:08.417-07:00Labor Day
It is the unofficial end of summer. And our first day of heavy rain this season. We have been in a moderate drought for months now. So, perhaps todays rain will improve that.

September is my favorite month of the year....weather cools down a bit, air is usually super clear. We do not slow down here at the inn however. We are almost 100% full all month. There is a day here and there open.

Our gardens suffered with the drought. They should rebound after todays rain. As we are on a well, we have been very cautious about watering. As many of you know, gardens are my passion. I am already planning for next years gardens!

We will close the last weekend of October. There is room still in October if you would like to visit. Give us a call! We would love to have you.

It's a good life on Bailey Island!

Sue
The Log Cabin Teamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12731703183930916084noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5233368187838836318.post-49633062892950864492022-06-03T11:24:00.002-07:002022-06-03T11:24:23.852-07:002 Months so far
Well, the first two months flew by! Everything has gone well this spring. We have been busy, seen many of our regulars and met some new folks!

Serving more dinners than usual. But this week Salt Cod is open, and 2 new places (Sundrenched and Fishnet cafe are suppose to open). Cooks and Dolphin are open as well.

The gardens are once again spectacular.....tulips and daffodils put on a great show. Now it's the iris and azaleas turn. Our popular dahlias are planted, but they take awhile.

Our pool is open as well. Weather has not been very warm yet, so it is waiting to be christened for the season.

We do have a little space left this summer, more in the fall. So, give us a call or shoot us a email.

Hope you all are well!

Sue
The Log Cabin Teamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12731703183930916084noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5233368187838836318.post-47141492630876957322022-04-01T10:52:00.002-07:002022-04-01T10:52:53.231-07:0042nd year
Here we go! What a change from last year. We have been packed! And serving more dinners than ever before!

Thank goodness we have such a hard working crew. They have really done an outstanding job--smiling the entire way through. I am sure we all will enjoy a bit of down time however.

If you have not visited this year, you have until the 30th of this month to do so! Then we will open back up the 1st of April, 2022. We do take reservations when we are closed. The best way is to email us. Or go to the web page and fill out the contact us form. We check phone and email daily.

Hope every one has a safe and healthy off season. Look forward to next season!

Thanks to my crew, and all of our lovely guests!

Sue
The Log Cabin Teamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12731703183930916084noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5233368187838836318.post-84512628938016834892021-09-11T06:19:00.001-07:002021-09-11T06:19:41.548-07:00Menu
Morning,

This is Sue.....again. Another food post. We have been in business for decades as many of you know. During the summer we had to put "Market price" on our menu for 3 of our dinners (lobster, surf and filet). This is the first time we have ever put market price on our menu. Obviously, due to sky rocketing prices.

Well, yesterday, we had to adjust all the prices on our menu. I was hoping we could hold out for the rest of the season, but we cannot. I have never seen seafood prices as high as they are now. And they are continuing to rise.

So, check our menu on our web site. It is up to date. Sorry, we had to do this--it is out of our control.

Of course, our food is still delicious , and our staff is beyond fabulous! So, if you do dine with us, I am sure you will be happy.

Thank you to all of our great guests. We have had a banner year!

Sue

The Log Cabin Teamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12731703183930916084noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5233368187838836318.post-71943688658929276042021-08-19T09:03:00.000-07:002021-08-19T09:03:12.225-07:00Dining out
Hello,

Hope everyone is well. Just wanted to give you all a heads up if you are planning to come stay with us. Restaurants everywhere have had a very difficult time this year. Staffing is the biggest problem. Some have closed.....some have cut their hours considerably.

So, it is wise to call ahead to find out if your favorite restaurant is open, and what their hours are. The ones that are open are extremely busy, so you may have to wait for a table.

We have printed up a sheet of places in this area and surrounding area with telephone numbers. Just email us if you would like us to send one to you.

And, we do serve dinner to room guests only, every day from 6-6:30. However, you do need to order by 3 pm each day so we can prep and staff accordingly. Actually, if you gave us even more notice, we would really appreciate it. There are only 6 of us and we do eveything from cook to serve, to clean etc.

Hope to see you. We are open until the last weekend in October!

Sue
The Log Cabin Teamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12731703183930916084noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5233368187838836318.post-80722263719015343272021-07-27T12:09:00.002-07:002021-07-27T12:09:48.501-07:00Time goes by!
Hello,

This is Sue. I guess time got away from me.......a caller today asked if we were open as our last blog was last September!

Sorry, as you all know, it has been a hectic time.

Anyhow, YES we are open. And YES we are busy. Everyone has been and is eager to go somewhere after the year plus we just lived through.

At the moment , we are full. We do have some rooms open here and there. We close the last weekend in October. Our dining room is open for breakfast and dinner. The pool is open.

We have the same crew...Matt, Aimee, Stephanie, Victoria, CC and me. We are happy to be open , and so happy to be able to see you all in person!

So, would love to see you. Give us a call at 207 833 5546. We are here from 7am-8pm. This is our 41st year. And all of our crew love our job, and would love to see you!!

Apologies for ignoring the blog. And look forward to seeing you!

Sue
The Log Cabin Teamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12731703183930916084noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5233368187838836318.post-41740335125286554722020-09-12T08:18:00.001-07:002020-09-12T08:18:47.173-07:00Season is rolling on
Wow! How can it be mid-September? Seems like time stood still in the spring, and the summer flew by!

Happy to say, we had a very busy August! And, so far September is looking good as well. The weather certainly has cooperated. Beautiful clear crisp day today. Many of our guests are here for several days. Others are extending their stays.

We will be open until the end of October. Foliage usually peaks around mid October. The weather guy the other day said even though we are in a bit of a drought, that can often enhance the colors. So, that is good news for all the leaf peepers. Our yard is spectacular. Dahlias in full bloom now, grass is green.

Bailey Island is always pretty no matter the season. But 2020 has made all of us appreciate the quiet, the space, the views, the remoteness of this special place.

I, for one, value every day, every guest, every moment those I am close to continue to remain healthy.

So grateful,

Sue
The Log Cabin Teamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12731703183930916084noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5233368187838836318.post-82037009153183788612020-08-04T05:32:00.002-07:002020-08-04T05:34:45.156-07:00AugustWelcome to August

We have certainly had some amazing weather this summer. Rather hot for Bailey Island, but lots and lots of sun! Which has worked out very well with the guests being able to eat on their decks!

We have the system down now. I will say climbing the stairs with a heavy tray of food is a challenge. Aimee, CC, Victoria and Stephanie are doing a super job. If I were the one delivering the food , it would take me 4 trips!

Many of our regular guests have visited, with more arriving soon. It is so wonderful to see everyone able to visit, swim in the pool, eating on their decks....and of course admiring our gardens!

We do need some rain.....maybe tonight we will get some from the Tropical storm that is on its way. And hopefully not too much wind.

As usual, we will stay open through the month of October. Fall is my favorite.

Stay safe!

Sue
The Log Cabin Teamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12731703183930916084noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5233368187838836318.post-19115232860869296732020-07-08T06:11:00.001-07:002020-07-08T06:11:45.707-07:00Can it really be July?Hello,

This is Sue. Cannot believe we have only been open for less than one month. Opened June 19th this year.

We have implemented many changes due to COVID. I have to tell you the first weekend I was in tears.

It seemed our "new way" was not as hospitable as we used to be. The contactless check-in. Serving room service only. But our guests have been more than gracious (as usual). And now, after a couple weeks, we are in the swing!

We are going over the top with the room cleaning! Takes us about twice as long as in the past. We wash everything in the rooms at checkout from quilts to floors , doorknobs to lightswitch......then we either use a UV light or an electrostatic sprayer and/or room air purifier! So, you can feel safe here.

In the past years, the health inspector would come and give "grades".....if we got a 99 instead of 100 we were upset. This year, if there were "grades" , I am sure we would get 1000!

Our yard is spectacular! The view is amazing! Our crew is stupendous! And, our food is always a hit.

I am one lucky girl.

Hope you all stay healthy, and come see us at some point.

Sue
The Log Cabin Teamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12731703183930916084noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5233368187838836318.post-46786083254017036012020-05-21T10:17:00.000-07:002020-05-21T10:17:38.840-07:00Interesting timesHi,

This is Sue. For those of you who do not know, we normally open the first weekend of April. However, the pandemic prevented that from happening. We now have an opening date.....June 19th. BUT, we can only rent to folks from the State of Maine. This is per our Governor.

There is currently a 14 day quarantine on anyone from out of state. We are anxiously waiting for that to be lifted. We are now allowed to take reservations from folks out of State, but if the quarantine is not lifted, we would need to cancel those reservations.

As you all know, the information about this health crisis changes daily. Some good news, some not so good news. The good news for Maine is that our numbers of cases and deaths are very low compared to other states. We are very thankful for that. And our restrictions and guidelines are very strict. For any business to open there are pages and pages of things we must adhere to.

As we move along through the next month, we will be working towards doing everything we can to keep everyone safe and healthy. I will keep you all informed both on the blog, Facebook and under our Covid Banner on our main web page.

We always have prided ourselves on catering to our guests in every way possible. It is much more challenging this season. We will put 100% of our efforts into meeting that challenge.

Til next time.....stay safe!

This is Sue......I know its been forever since I did a blog. But, it is August of 2019. Neal and I purchased what is now the Log Cabin Inn from John Wiseman August of 1979. It was a summer home at the time. We were quite young (in our 20's) and had a heck of a time convincing a bank that we could convert this home into a Seasonal Restaurant and actually pay the bank back! With perseverance, we succeeded!

We opened what was the Log Cabin Restaurant March 13, 1980. I had previously run Rock Ovens Restaurant for the seven years prior. So, it wasn't like the business was new to me. For many, many years we ran the restaurant from March thru October.....and it was unbelievably busy! For those of you who have never done restaurant work, let me tell you it is very exhausting! So, with the encouragement of my family ( Aimee, my daughter in law initiated this thought), we converted the restaurant into an Inn.

It is the best thing we ever did with this building. The work is considerably less exhausting , physically and mentally. We have been fortunate to attract and keep many , many of the same guests over the years.

This weekend we have a family of 22 that have been coming for the past 20 years. The family was considerably smaller 20 years ago, but more kids were born, and some are married now. This is just one example of our lovely clientele. We are very fortunate!

Guests that left this morning said this is our second home.....a bit of heaven.

We agree. The Inn is just like home to all of us. We are a huge extended family! Thanks to all who have made our life here at the Log Cabin Inn a pleasure.

Love and Thanks to all,

Happy summer everyone! First, I want to apologize for not posting more often! That will change. We have been very busy and the phone is ringing off the hook with folks looking for availability now that the summer is finally here and gorgeous! One of our beloved regular guests asked me when I would be writing another blog so I am writing this for you Hillary!

Today started with the smell of bacon and fresh coffee. I made a Maine blueberry baked French toast casserole today with whipped cream and a lavender garnish. CC served a watermelon slice garnished with a borage flower and a maple pecan muffin to start so, needless to say, no one left hungry!

Victoria is on vacation in Canada so we are all working hard to make sure that the weeding gets done and the gardens look great when she returns next week. Sue and Alicia were here working outside today and my nephew and his friend came by to use the pool (only after weeding of course ;-)

I sat out by the pool for a few minutes, put my feet in and the temperature is a perfect refresher from the warm summer sun! Guests were reading and napping under the shade of the umbrella and another was floating comfortable in the pool saying she "had waited all year for this moment".

The boat traffic is heavy, the sounds carry and I could hear the sound of laughter in the wind. Lots of birds are chirping and the occasional sound of a motorcycle going by on the way to Lands End reminds me of how gorgeous the weather is outside!

It is tuna tournament this week and so far, 4 tuna over 300 lbs have come in AND a 380 lb thresher shark too!

Sue ordered some amazing photos on wood from local photographer Ben Williamson to put up in the restrooms by the gift shop, they are gorgeous and capture the beauty of Bailey Island so perfectly. Thanks Ben! #benjaminwilliamsonphotography

www.benjaminwilliamsonphotography.com

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">
Hi everyone! It's Stephanie and I'm happy to be back for a 2nd season working full time! The sun is starting to show itself at the end of a rainy and foggy April but you all know that the Log Cabin Inn is a great place no matter the weather! Victoria made some amazing blueberry pancakes with sausage this morning to get our guests off to a great start to their day. That was accompanied by an apple puff pastry and overnight oats with pears and pecans. Tonight we have two more rooms checking in making 6 rooms for this weekend. Our guests are being treated to comfy beds, warm soft blankets, toasty gas fireplaces and heavenly smelling coffee, new movies and more. Some are celebrating anniversaries and birthdays and some are just here to get away from the stress of the world. What better place for that is there? Morse's and Cook's are open and our kitchen is as well. Victoria is cooking a tasty surf and turf dinner tonight starting with our famous garlic knots and salad. Appetizers include the scallops wrapped in bacon and yummy crab dip! Save room for dessert because our homemade confections are to die for! The lucky couple may just have our cozy, quiet and relaxing dining room to themselves tonight. So, treat yourselves and come see us in the early spring or late in the fall. Our hospitality and amenities are the same as our busier times and you may find the extra quiet even cozier and more relaxing than ever!Log Cabin Mainehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13109550180779285083noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5233368187838836318.post-13740700062608011232019-04-12T11:44:00.001-07:002019-04-12T11:44:36.634-07:00Another SeasonHello,

This is Sue. Been so long since I wrote a blog someone had to give me directions!

We are beginning our 39th year at the Log Cabin. Next year.....40! Big celebration. I am happy to say, I still love this place and look forward to every season. Although I am not officially on the schedule, I try to stay somewhat involved. Of course, I still buy car loads of flowers for the yard.....and do other errands. I am so lucky that my son Matt, and his beautiful wife, Aimee are so competent. Actually, they are more competent than I ever was.

Our opening has been off to a slow start.....weather hasn't cooperated. But, this weekend is looking lovely! Our gardens are all cleaned up and plants are coming along. Kitchen is all prepped and ready for guests. So, come see us!

Give us a call! Hope to see you!

Hi everyone!

As I start preparing the last dinner of the season, it is raining heavily and very windy outside. Our guests are safe and warm inside their warm and cozy rooms watching movies and college football. The last load of laundry is folded for the day. The gas fireplace is warming the dining room.

I baked today. I wanted one last hurrah in that glorious kitchen before we close it down for 2018. I made pumpkin bread, cinnamon rolls, granola and garlic rolls. It smelled so good, it smelled like home. Those aromas draw people in don't they? People come into the kitchen to see what we are cooking and we welcome it! This kitchen is the heart of this home we all call Log Cabin. We have guests who clear their own tables and bring their dishes in, we have guests who come in to chat after breakfast, we have local friends who come in for coffee on the weekends and catch up on our busy lives.

The kitchen is where our staff spends the most time together sharing happiness and heartbreak, laughter and tears. It is where we plan our meals and allow our culinary creativity to shine. It is where we watch the beautiful sunsets you all see from your decks or the dining room. Many times this summer, this kitchen was filled with warm golden light of a sunset even prettier than the one the night before. Today it is where I sit filled with gratitude and content for my first season is in the books, 2018 was a great year wasn't it?

Tomorrow is my first "last day". I'm told it will be all hands on deck, lots of work but fun too! Aimee will organize us as we check items off of our lengthy task list and then we will stand around that big kitchen island and share pizza together talking about our off-season plans. When you are spending your holidays with your families in your kitchens, think of us and know that we are thinking of you as well. See you in 2019! XOXO, StephanieLog Cabin Mainehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13109550180779285083noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5233368187838836318.post-88286471666590291512018-09-26T12:06:00.005-07:002018-09-26T12:06:52.765-07:00The Key from the Keys

Paulie and Janie have been friends for 15 years. They have a lot in common. They both live in Tavernier, FL in the Florida Keys. They are both officers at their local Elks lodge. They've worked together on many charitable events throughout the years. They even play BINGO each week. One would say they know each other quite well.

During last week's BINGO tournament, they got talking about their vacations. Janie had recently been to Maine and Paulie was going to Maine with her mother in a few days. As they got talking a bit more, they realized that they both stayed on Bailey Island! What a small world! We say that a lot around here as we find so many connections when talking with our guests. Well, the world got even smaller for these two friends as they revealed that they both stay right here at the Log Cabin!

Janie rummaged through her purse and pulled out her key for the Casco Bay room that she had forgotten to return at checkout three weeks earlier. When Paulie checked in, guess what she hand delivered to us? That forgotten key all the way from the Keys! Turns out they have even more in common then they thought!

---Have a great day!
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Is it September already? Wow time flies by! The summer here has been busy and HOT! Luckily that nice ocean sea breeze cools us off at the end of each day. We've reunited with so many of you and caught up on what's been happening in your lives. We've met some new friends too, many of them referred here by you....someone's friend, mother, daughter, co-worker who just HAD to come see what all the talk was about! Thank you for that!
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The Schooner Alert has been a popular must do this summer. Bethany and Perry also have Tevake back in the water too. If you haven't gotten out to sail with them, put it on your list for 2019! The hiking trails are fantastic in Harpswell and many of you used the new guide published by Harpwell Heritage Land Trust to find some new places to explore. When we close at the end of October, we are starting a Tuesday hiking group led by Aimee so we can also explore each and every trail before winter hits!
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Can we talk about the flowers?? The dahlias are out and oh so beautiful. They make the dining room so pretty! I am so impressed with all the work that Victoria, Sue and team put into the flowers here! I love how happy they make everyone too. I'm not a gardener but their passion is making me want to learn more about it for sure.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">We hope your summer was fantastic and that you are looking forward to the colors of fall, cool, crisp sleeping weather, football and comfort food! We are open until the end of October and hope to see many more of you. If you haven't stayed with us in the fall, give us a call. All of our rooms are heated, some have gas fireplaces. We also serve dinner every night so you can cuddle up, read a book, watch a movie and let us take care of you!
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

Hello everyone! This is Stephanie and I'd like to share my Log Cabin story with all of you.

I’ve spent years as a corporate executive flying all over
the world, dining in wonderful restaurants and staying in many hotels and
inns. Like most of you who travel, sometimes
you have the pleasure of finding a place whose staff greets you with kindness
and humor after a long flight or drive making you feel comfortable and welcome. Those are few and far between so the good
memories stick with you.

With that hectic schedule, it became important for my
husband, Jon and I to have some special time together when I was home in
Maine. We found the perfect place in the
Log Cabin and soon made it our regular staycation destination to relax and
destress even though it was only 30 minutes from our home in Freeport. Every time we checked in, we were greeted by
welcoming staff who became friends over the years. We grew to crave the instant deep breaths of
ocean air, the view, the gorgeous rooms and the “to die for” breakfasts that
come with a stay at the Log Cabin. In
fact, I can say, without question, that the Log Cabin was easily my hotel of
choice of any that I’ve stayed at anywhere in the world.

So, at almost 50 and at a point in my life where I am in awe
of how small a world it actually is, I often find myself watching things come
full circle. Well that happened to me this
year when Aimee called to ask if I was interested in coming onboard as a Log
Cabin staff member. With a break in my
career this spring, the timing was perfect!
“Yes!! I would love to!”, I told
Aimee with excitement.

I left the corporate world behind in 2013 and had a few
different jobs including an entrepreneur (I had my own Maine Made gift shop,
The Wishful Moon, in Freeport) and as an Executive Director of the Greater
Freeport Chamber of Commerce. Throughout
all that time, I stayed in touch with Sue, Alicia and Aimee always recommending
Log Cabin to just about everyone I knew!
(You all know how that goes, wink, wink!) In 2016, Jon and I moved from
Freeport to Orr’s Island and officially became part of this island
community. Our special place had become
our actual home! How lucky we felt! Full circle <span style="font-family: "Segoe UI Emoji",sans-serif; margin: 0px;">😊

So, in April, I came to work. To the place that brought me such joy, to the
place where I was immediately welcomed to the team and shown the ropes. Victoria, Wendy and CC quickly became new
friends. I learned how much I love to
cook and how much the Log Cabin means to all of you. It has been interesting experiencing it from
the other side and all I want to do is to make sure each guest has as much fun
and feels as relaxed and happy as I did every time I stayed here. I can’t say enough good things about Sue,
Aimee, Matt and the team. These are
people who truly care about each and every one of you. They have thought of all the details and it
is their dedication to quality, customer care and thoughtfulness that will
always make the Log Cabin one of the most amazing destinations you can hope to
find. I am happy every day that I come
to work. (Only part of that is because
of the 90 second commute <span style="font-family: "Segoe UI Emoji",sans-serif; margin: 0px;">😉 Part of it is also each one of you who have welcomed me so warmly.

I am
proud to be a part of this family and realize that I always have been and
remain so… now just in a slightly different way. Full circle <span style="font-family: "Segoe UI Emoji",sans-serif; margin: 0px;">😊
It wasn't that long ago that I was telling you about our move to Massachusetts or Southern New
Hampshire. I think it was actually the next day that we made a family decision to stay in Maine! We have a house under contract in Freeport and will close in June. I will be working full time as Administrative Assistant at St. John's School in Brunswick, where Terrence goes and will be present in some form at the Log Cabin. Someone needs to stay and take care of all Sue's plants. Victoria and I are trying to get the outside back in order. Just as the tulips are coming up and I was thinking we were in the clear the deer showed up for dinner. The daffodils and tulips do look pretty no matter how long they may last. The rhubarb is growing pretty good as well as the poppy's. Victoria has cut back the rose bushes so they should be going crazy this summer. I did have Sue order the Dahlia bulbs. That is one thing I look forward to planting. Speaking of planting we have built two new planters on the Sunset and Westview decks. Our new employee Stephanie has been busy organizing the gift shop and we have some new spices for sale that I am quite eager to try.

Tonight is our first No Vacancy night of the season. We are actually full tonight and Sunday night.
You have to Love the State of Maine. Here I am thinking about the rhubarb and dahlia's and Matt and the boys are putting in the last day of skiing at Sugarloaf and Terrence and Jon are at Car Show #1 of the season. Talk about diversity.

I hope everyone has a great week. Nothing says Happy Mother's Day like a gift certificate to the Log Cabin, just saying.

Blessings,
I am sure you have been wondering what in the World has happened at the Log Cabin Inn and what has happened to the blog. Well what a Winter it has been. Not counting the many, many snow storms and extremely cold January temperatures lots more has been going on. Lets start with me. We sold our house here in Harpswell in January and decided to relocate to Massachusetts at the end of the school year. As many of you know my husband works in Boston and the weekly commute was getting old.
I will continue working at the Log Cabin this Spring until mid June. We are renting a house locally. This has been the busiest off season I have ever had. I have been substituting at Terrence's school and I have a client at the Senior home I have been taking care of, along with driving to MA to look at houses. I also spent 5 weeks in a walking cast on my left leg to repair my Achilles so I wouldn't need surgery and luckily it worked. We had endless snow days at school. The District is doing everything they can to get the kids out by June 25th. Sue also moved from Bailey Island to Orrs Island.

So enough about me. Matt and Aimee were busy once again this Winter. I only just went in the rooms today. It seems like it was the year of the couch's here. The Harpswell , Mt. Washington, and Westview rooms all have new couch's. The Harpswell room has a new walkway, which I will enjoy since I will not have to weed it. Harpswell also has a new kitchen floor which I am thrilled about as well. Casco Bay, Bluefin and Sunset all have new decks. Westview has a new microwave cart and refrigerator. Many other small things, too many to count. Matt also did a lot of painting in the kitchen and organizing our back laundry room.

Today I spent a few hours in my Winter clothes and hat raking some of the flower beds and starting the clean up. The tulips are coming up ( if the deer do not get them) along with the daffodils, crocus, and rhubarb. Tonight I started prepping some food. The smell of that crab dip made me want to eat the whole thing.

We have the crew coming back from last year. CC, Wendy, Victoria, Aimee, Matt and myself. I want you to also welcome Stephanie to our group. She lives on Orrs Island and has been a former room guest. She also works at Fiore which is where we get the wonderful olive oil that we give away in the rooms.

I promise I will try and do better with the blog.

Blessings,

The day we closed, Sunday October 29th one of the last room guests asked if I would write about the storm we were about to have the next day. Sure what is a little rain and wind going to do. I did go to bed prepared with a flashlight just in case. The wind started howling about 3am and about 4:30 the power went out. When I finally started moving around about 6:30 I got the email message that there wasn't any school. This is only October and we are already using the allotted snow days. My next thought was, is my Mom's 10:30AM flight actually going to leave. The airlines said it was on time so we ventured out. I was in no way prepared for what was to happen on the ride up Rt 123 to Brunswick. Many, many trees were down, ripped right out of the roots on to the street and lawns and some on houses. There was one spot that the trees ripped the power lines across the street. I was able to go under one of them ( I know not the safest move). The other one they closed the road for but I was able to take a detour. To make a long story short it was one bad scene after another. Listening to the radio there were Half a Million people in Maine without power. Terrence and I spent most of the day in Portland because around the Mall area they had power. I got home and wheeled out our small pull start generator that runs basically the well pump, furnace, fridge and a few outlets. By nightfall they had already called off school for Tuesday. Tuesday was Halloween and they even canceled Halloween until Friday because most of the roads were unsafe to travel. Every day we were hopeful that Harpswell would be next to get power. Sue and Victoria got it back first. Aimee, Matt, CC and myself finally got it on Saturday, 6 days later. It took Wendy 9 days to get hers back. The Harpswell kids were 5 days, the whole week without school. It is the longest I have ever been without power.

Aimee finally got to finish the laundry at the Inn from the day we closed . I started working on the outside gardens and digging up the dahlia bulbs. Just as everyone was getting back in the groove and life back to normal the next storm hit. Early Friday morning November 10th the telephone poles and power lines that run along the Bailey Island Bridge fell over into the water. Needless to say Bailey Island was without power once again. The temperatures were down to 25 deg at night. After almost 2 weeks of working 24/7 Central Maine Power was hard at work again. They could only work on the lines at low tide and for a portion of time they were working the bridge was closed in both directions. They did a fantastic job restoring power in cold, windy and less than ideal conditions. I did some more work in the gardens today and saw one pole still in the water.

We all are hoping for a less traumatic Winter but I am not so sure that is going to happen. I am already sick of losing power and we haven't even seen snow yet.

Blessings,
I guess I must have forgotten about September because there seems to have been no blog, whoops!
I didn't really forget about it but it went by so fast. We had No Vacancy the whole month and we were busy every night at dinner. The beginning of October seems to be the same. We have had No Vacancy almost every night so far. It has been one big summer. The weather has been like summer as well. We will take days in the high 70's and some 80's in October. I am still sleeping with the windows open at night and thankfully haven't needed to turn the furnace on. The dahlia's are loving this weather, cool at night and warm during the day. I think we may have blossoms until Thanksgiving.
This Saturday the 14th the Town is celebrating Harpswell Days. I went last year and it was quite interesting. They had demonstrations on woodworking, basket weaving, butter churning ,quilting, beekeeping, knitting lobster trap heads, making herbal remedies and lots more. I especially liked the tour of the old cemetery and the Meeting House. There were some cool artifacts in the museum and we even got to press cider. This is all located on RT 123 at Harpswell Center. If you are not around this weekend you could always see the cemetery and Meeting Hall on another visit.

Update on Cedar Beach is they had a successful season with the parking and beach monitoring done by the Town. You can access the beach as a guest of the Log Cabin. There are several parking spots before the walking path down there but your best bet is to just park at the Inn and walk down. This time of year you would have the place to yourself and no problem parking.

The season is starting to wind down. The Cribstone Grill is closed, Salt Cod Café is closed, The Alert just did their last sail. The Dolphin is open Thur-Sun but will close the same weekend we do on October 29th. Lands End is open now but I believe will go to just weekends in November and December. I am glad that the candy store is still open! It doesn't even feel like fall yet except for the leaves changing and the sun setting sooner. We have had an amazing season so far and look forward to the next two weeks. There is still time to get in one more visit.

Blessings,

It doesn't seem possible that tomorrow, August 24th Terrence will be back at School and starting the
5th Grade. Danny will be entering High School and Josh will be starting Middle School both on September 5th. I am not sure what happened to Summer but it didn't seem like it existed this year. The kids got out of school late, it rained all Spring and most of June. Now we have been in a drought July and August. The grass is brown and crunchy and we have spent hours every day watering.
We haven't had any really hot, hot days and now it looks like the temperatures will be in the mid to low 70's for a couple of weeks. I like that crisp Maine air that Fall brings. Howver I did not like the fact that I only got to Stovers Cove Beach one Friday this Summer. Mother Nature did not cooperate on Friday's. Speaking of Stovers Cove there was a very large fire there last week. I could see the flames up above the tree line from the lawn at the Inn. The black smoke roared for quite some time. Luckily it was an abandoned building and some of the trees as well caught on Fire. As I stated before we are very fortunate to have 3 Fire Stations in Harpswell that responded very quickly and no one was hurt.

This weekend Brunswick is hosting the Great State of Maine Air Show.Once again the highlight is the Blue Angels flight team. I saw two of them fly in last night. You can hear them long before you can see them! I hope to get on the water and head North on Merriconeag Sound. The Sound brings you up almost to the end of the runway.
I recently went to the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath to see the new Lighthouse exhibit. What a fascinating exhibit it is. It is a Full scale Replica of the Cape Elizabeth Maine Light

house tower lantern room. The exhibit is the first of its kind anywhere. The Museum also is restoring the 1906 Schooner Mary E. It was built in 1906 at the sight of which is now Bath Iron Works. The Schooner has an extensive and very interesting History.

Often it can be the little things that one needs to appreciate in life and I am so excited to see one of our trees cut down. This tree was at the corner of the building just outside the bar. Now that it is down I don't have to struggle to climb over the rock wall to get to the Vegetable Garden. It also opens up the whole area and brings so much light into that corner. So much so Sue had to go out and buy more plants if you can believe that.

I hope you all have a Safe and Healthy Labor Day Weekend. Our September is very busy but we do have openings toward the end of the month and into October. We will close this year on Saturday October 28th.
