Bailey Island is part of the town of Harpswell, Maine. This confuses folks sometimes, as South Harpswell is referred to as Harpswell, and the "islands", Bailey, Orrs and Great are usually referred to as the "islands". But, the town does include both peninsulas. When I was a kid, you had to drive into Brunswick from the islands to get to South Harpswell. Now, there is a bridge connecting the 2 sides.

There are 216 miles of shoreline in Harpswell, more than any other town in the United States! Most of this is rocky, as you can see in the pictures. The town also has a very active Business Association (www.harpswellmaine.org). This web site shows the many things/businesses/services that the town offers.

One new business that is moving into the old BNAS, now the Brunswick Executive Airport, is Maine Midcoast Flight. This company offers scenic tours of the area, and is also a pilot training flight school. The company offers a variety of scenic flights, starting at $48/person. This would be a great way to see the town of Harpswell. Their web site is www.mainecoastalflight.com. Of course, just walking around town is a great way to see parts as well.

However you prefer, flying, boating, walking, driving.....Bailey Island and Harpswell is a beautiful area. If you have not reserved to come see us yet, please give us a call (207 833 5546). We open for the season April 6th!

Gratitude

I just read a book about gratitude that made me think about all I have to be thankful for. As this is a Log Cabin Inn blog, I will concentrate on what makes me appreciate the Inn. These things are in no order of importance.....just random things that pop into my head.....

***The fact that my Mom was born and brought up on Orr's Island, and we have many generations of history here.
***That I grew up in the service industry, with my brother owning the Bailey Island Motel, and my Aunt the Square Deal restaurant....and I began working at both at age 12 (which, I cannot believe is almost 50 years of working in the service industry!)
***That my husband Neal thought we should buy the Log Cabin back in 1979 so I could continue in the restaurant industry (I argued that perhaps I would like to do something else with my life....but as usual, Neal won).
***That my brilliant daughter in law, Aimee, said she was tired of restaurant work back in 1995....prompting us to convert the then Log Cabin Restaurant into the Log Cabin Island Inn.
***That my sons, Matt and Adam, are multi-talented and have worked tirelessly over the years converting and renovating the Inn.
***That both Matt and Aimee have turned into fabulous Innkeepers (and have let me continue to work with them).
***That our "crew" has worked together for many, many years now, and contributed in so many ways to the success of the Log Cabin.
***That the Inn happens to be located in one of the most beautiful places on earth!
***That we now have hundreds of wonderful, repeat guests who we all treasure and look so forward to seeing and visiting with year after year.

So, from me to all of you, Thank You for blessing my life. I am one lucky girl! Sue

Fog

This kind of looks like the bridge to nowhere! Actually, it is the Bailey Island bridge, taken from the Bailey Island side. Once upon a time, when my Mom was young (prior to the 1930's), there was not a bridge at all! The only way across was by boat! And, back then, there was a bit of a feud between Orr's and Bailey Island. Those days are gone. Of course, I am a bit partial to Bailey Island.....

We have had a mild winter overall.....not much snow, not much severe cold. Today it is in the 40's, and the snow we have is rapidly melting. Personally, that is fine with me. The snow can stay in the ski areas! Speaking of skiing, Matt and Aimee have been taking Josh and Danny (and other Harpswell Island School kids) skiing at Lost Valley in Auburn on Friday nights. The boys are enjoying it! It is nice that there is a small ski area near by.

Spring is officially here in 56 more days....which, of course means that we open in 73 days! We are doing some repairs and painting....a couple new carpets, a few new curtains. This has been a relatively easy year for renovations.....well, not if you ask Matt! Poor Matt has been doing his least favorite job--plumbing!! He is re-plumbing everything that he can see....not a very fun or rewarding job, but a necessary one!

We are entering our 32nd year at the Log Cabin....15 as a restaurant, 17 as an Inn. Fortunately, all of us that are privileged to work at the Log Cabin, still love it.
We look forward to another season of welcoming back our repeat guests, and meeting some new ones! If you have not reserved, give us a call!

Snowstorm

Here in Maine, the local station, Channel 6, begins reporting at 4:30am daily. When there is a snowstorm, they send reporters all over the State to show how much snow there is. There is one guy, that reports from his kitchen table (complete with cats....but that is another story)....and he always claims to send his wife out with a ruler to measure the snow on the gas grill! So, I thought I would follow his scientific method of measuring. Looks like 7 inches and still snowing right now. Now, they predicted 1-3 and turning to rain. Our ground was completely bare before this storm. Hopefully, the northern part of the State is getting snow as well. They have had to cancel cross country skiing meets, snowmobilers are crying, and ski slopes sure could use it. And, my gardens love snow!

Maine shrimp and scallop season has begun. The season will be much shorter, and yes, the cost is much higher. But, oh, there is nothing like Maine scallops and shrimp. We are buying and freezing for our season (the season is over when we open).

There was no school today, so my grandsons, Dan and Josh came over to visit while Aimee did some work at the Inn. Now they are helping their Dad plow. I took my 2 labs out for a walk, and they were thrilled with the snow. It is pretty....if it would just shovel itself! I guess I will go make a path (or wait 'til Matt comes.....no, I will do it--he does have a bad back).

Happy 2012!

Today is the first day of Maine shrimp season. The State of Maine has imposed some very strict rules on the shrimp season and scallop season. I did a bit of research to see why and found out the following: in 2010, .18 million pounds of Maine scallops were harvested....this is down from a high of 3.8 million pounds in 1981. As for the Maine shrimp catch, in 2010, 12.2 million were caught, down from 24.2 million pounds in 1969. So, it is obvious that the number shrimp and scallops are declining. So, I guess I had better get on the phone and place my order for this year! I would imagine that the price will increase considerably.....the old supply and demand theory. On a positive note, 94.7 million pounds of Maine lobster were harvested in 2010...an all time high, and up from 16.4 million pounds in 1994!! So, there should be no problem with the lobster supply!

We do try to buy as much of our food and supplies locally....a trend that is becoming very common, I am happy to say! In contrast, 4 national chain stores are closing in the Brunswick area: Borders, Talbots, Payless shoes and Fashion Bug.

The picture above is of some paper whites that a friend of mine gave me at Christmas. They had just begun to sprout. In celebration of New Years, they were completely blossomed. They are very pretty. Our weather is still mild, 45 degrees today, no snow, no ice....still have green grass. Very odd!

Winter solstice

I took the sunset picture on the shortest day of the year. The sun is setting behind Mark Island this time of year.....and most of you know, on the longest day of the year, it sets behind Mt. Washington. I am very happy that the days are getting longer...not a fan of cold and dark at the same time! The picture of the sea smoke was taken on Christmas morning. Our mild temperatures we have had this fall, dipped quickly on Christmas--thus the sea smoke. It is quite spectacular to see! We did get a dusting of snow here on Bailey Island, but it is disappearing now. They are predicting heavy rain and wind later today.

Such a busy time of year with the Holidays. My grandson Josh turned 6 on December 21st too.....so more parties and presents. Those 6 years sure flew by. It is amazing how fast time goes. I never seem to get all the projects done that I think I can do in the off season.

Reservations continue to come in thankfully. We open in 99 days!

Christmas week

Well, we got a tiny bit of snow yesterday....so I ran out and got some pictures of the snow on the plants before it melts. Little did I know that the temperatures would be 18 degrees today......so I really did not have to hurry! Anyhow, it was good timing because we were putting up our tree and getting ready to go to Cooks for dinner for their fundraiser for the Harpswell Heating assistance program.

The fundraiser was a huge success....I believe they raised $5000.....a silent auction with tons of great local donations, and dinner, and of course Santa made an early debut! Cooks Restaurant and Lobster has been a fixture on the island for many years now, and it is so great of them to do this fundraiser. The place was packed with folks, lots of carolling, lots of fun. Matt, Aimee, Alicia and kids joined Neal and I.....it was a very nice evening. Thank You to all of the folks at Cooks!

December on the island

Well, I just got back from Key West, and the weather here is still mild! Grass is green, some of the flowers are still blooming (the forsythia in my yard think it is spring and flowering), no frost yet. I am sure it is coming, but the slower the better as far as I am concerned. The only thing is, it does not look like Christmas. We do have lights on this little blue spruce. We get out blue spruce from a nice tree farm in Freeman township. You can cut your own tree there too. But, that is about 2 hours from here.

This weekend the local Harpswell Craft Guild has hosted Holidays in Harpswell. I sure hope they do well. There are several talented craft people in town. Next weekend Cooks Restaurant has a Holiday dinner and silent auction from 4-7 to benefit the Harpswell Heating fuel assistance program. There have been a ton of really good items donated (including, of course, a night at the Log Cabin). It is a good cause, and many people attend.

So, perhaps if I drag out a few Christmas decorations I will get in the holiday mood. I do hope all of you have a very Happy holiday season. Stay healthy and safe!

Thankful

I don't think I have ever seen the tide this low at the bridge. This picture was taken the day before we had the big snow storm. Well, it was not really big here on Bailey Island as is often the way. But, if you drove to Brunswick it was big.....lots of accidents, and of course, we lost power (that goes without saying on Bailey Island).

That is one thing to be thankful for on the island. The weather is often much better (warmer in the winter, cooler in the summer) than it is inland. There are endless reasons to be thankful here on Bailey Island.....the beauty, the community, the safety, the small town feel.....I could go on and on.

But, being Thanksgiving week, I am thankful for my family, friends, and of course the Log Cabin. We are starting our 32nd year this year at the Cabin....15 as a restaurant, and 17 as an Inn. I think I love my job as an Innkeeper more and more each year. Our "guests" are becoming an extended family. We really are SOOOO fortunate to have such a great clientele! The Inn is a very special place, and obviously attracts very special people.

So, Thank you to my family, friends and all of our guests. I hope your Thanksgiving was a happy one. Sue

Never ending yard work

Matt and Daisy are starting the job of clearing our hill. We do this almost every year, and by the fall, it looks like we never did it! As most of you know, plants, flowers, shrubs, trees, all love the Log Cabin yard. We have a ton of sun, and the temperature is 10 degrees warmer in the winter and 10 degrees cooler in the summer, than it is in Brunswick. Many of the flowers are still blooming--in mid November! We have also chopped the rosa rigosa (of which we have many).

Although I am not participating in this clean up physically, I am doing my part by pre-ordering lots of dahlias for next season! For some reason, my post office box receives many flower catalogs!!

Thanksgiving next week.....we will cook a local Two Cove Farms turkey. It is one of my favorite holidays.....food and family. Can't beat that. Hope you all enjoy your holiday as well! Sue

What a difference a week makes

Last week at this time we were in storm prep mode. This week it is warm and sunny. The dahlias are still blooming away at the Inn. Maybe I will be able to pick some for Thanksgiving! The Inn is all neat and tidy.....water will be drained this week, and all heat turned off. We have made our "list" of winter projects for Matt and Aimee to do. I do hope the winter is not too severe. The early October storm was a bit of a shock to many. We actually fared better here in Maine than other New England states.

We just went over to get our "share" of beef from the Two Coves Farm in Harpswell. There are many Christmas fairs going on today. I actually had time to read an entire book this week! I do miss the Inn however. Well, we will open back up in 155 days!

End of a great season

Here is a picture of the first 2 courses of the "last breakfast" of 2011.....believe me the kitchen does not look like that this morning......there is not a scrap to be found. We did our super duper,last day, pizza party/cleanup yesterday. After serving breakfast to a full house, we strip down EVERYTHING!! Dining room stripped, rooms stripped, kitchen empty......only remains is some more laundry on the laundry room floor to finish.

As you can see, the gardens survived the snowstorm......there was 5-6 inches of snow a few miles up the road, but as usual, Bailey Island saw very little. That was helpful, as our last day open is a ton of work!!!

I want to thank all of my guests for such a great 2011. We love you all more than you know. And I especially want to thank my "Super Crew"....Matt, Aimee, Alicia, Laura, Shelby and Sarah. You guys are the best. You all make coming to work (if you can call this work), a sincere pleasure!

Sunrise and sunset on Bailey Island

We are down to our last week open......and everyone keeps asking if I am happy about that. The answer is NO!!!!! As many of you know, I love this Inn, love my guests, love everything about the Log Cabin. And, I rush every morning to come up and open the door, check the emails, pick flowers, sometimes cook breakfast, and am surrounded by people who are happy. Who would not want a job like this one?

The days are getting very short however. The sunrise picture was at 7am today....and the sun had not even come up! The sunset picture was at 6:15 pm....it sets before our dinner hour is over. Speaking of dinners, I think we have served a record number of dinners in the past month. Actually, I also think we have had a record number of rooms rented this October as well! That is a good thing.

So, I will continue to blog over the winter and keep you up to date on the "happenings". If you have not reserved for 2012 yet, give us a call!

Family

On a Beautiful Warm October day last week Terrence, my Mom and I drove North on Rt.1 to see the Pemaquid Point Lighthouse. We stopped at Shaws Wharf in New Harbor and had the most wonderful lunch out on the dock. Not often that you can wear shorts in October in Maine and still be Hot. On the way back we stopped in Damriscotta at the PumpkinFest. This was one of the most amazing sights. There were over 50 Pumpkins lining Main St. all designed in different genres. As you can see in the one above, that is the Sandwich Shop Pumpkin. This will be a definite stop for next year.

I started to think, only 2 more weeks before we close for the season and already I am starting to miss our wonderful guests who are more like family than they are customers. I said Good Bye to Jean and Carl this week, whom I am not sure they would like it but are like really cool grandparents. Doreen and Joe are leaving today and I would have to say Doreen gets the award for the most visits per year. Curt and Kathleen are back in NY not to be seen from again til April. The Taylor's are here today celebrating yet another Anniversary with us. The point is I could go on and on every day about the guests we have that day and what they mean to us/ me. It is comforting that they are truly interested in where my husband is traveling and how Terrence is doing at school and what strange thing he is eating this week. In the next two weeks I will be savoring every conversation until next year.

Birthday week

What a great week we have had. We celebrated my birthday, as you can see. Alicia made me a yummy Boston cream pie (from scratch of course). And, we had the cutest honey moon couple stay with us.....their car broke down, so they were "stuck" here with us. Fortunately for us, Emma is a singer and sang for us and played the piano. They are a great couple, and we wish them a very happy life!

We also have been 100% full (finally rooms open up this week a bit), and we had record breaking heat this past weekend! It was 85 degrees in Portland, and sunshine and unlimited visibility. It could not have been prettier here on the island.

I cannot believe we close up in 19 days.....time sure zipped by this season.....maybe because we were so busy! We are already over 25% booked for 2012.....looks like another busy one. This place is soooooooooo grrrreat!!!

Aquaculture

You should be able to tell that it is Apple Season here in Maine. Apple Pie for Dessert last night and homemade warm Applesauce at Breakfast this morning. Sue was also making an Apple Crisp for her home today. Sue's baking doesn't happen often but since there wasn't a crust involved Neal should be safe. Speaking of Sue, Aimee and I are reminded daily ( by Sue) that it is her Birthday this week, the 5th. Last year we planned a Big Bash so she said we didn't have to go Big this year but she would like a luncheon and homemade pie, hint hint.

Big things are happening across town at Mitchell Field. Plans are being formed for the Harpswell Oceanic Center. This will be a sustainable fish hatchery focusing on education and research. This facility will be searching for a way to build an aquaculture facility that replaces mechanical water filters with organic filters like worms,algae and shellfish. Mitchell Field is a great location with easy public access, the pier and beach all right there.

September was a crazy busy month at the Inn. It seemed like we were busier than July. I know a lot more people were eating Dinner and I don't blame them. The Sun is setting at about 6:25 and it has been the most Beautiful Fall Sunsets ever. It is sad to think we are open only 28 more days this Season.

Fall is here

The first weekend of fall started out foggy and rainy. Then it ended up hot and sunny. Neal and I went north this weekend to the Sugarloaf area for the first time in 5 years(I know, we are boring). I first started to notice some color in the trees when we hit the Maine Turnpike in Augusta. Then the further north we went, the color intensified. Around the Belgrade Lakes area and up Route 27 towards Kingfield is quite beautiful right now. I would not say peak, but close.

The Inn has been full almost the whole month of September. We do have a couple rooms open during the week this week. Then the first 2 weeks of October are almost completely full too....an occasional opening. We really have had a super season. I cannot believe we are only open for another 5 weeks!! Where does the time go??

Well, I must go cook breakfast.....here come the guests! Hope all is well with all of you, Sue

Fall is Here.

Well, technically Fall is not here until Friday but this morning it felt like it. I wore long pants today for the first time since May. Later in the day it heated right up and I wish I had shorts on. Some parts of the State had their first frost, which usually doesn't happen for 2 more weeks. Any leaf peepers out there headed this way can first check the Maine Conservation's Fall Foliage Website @ www.mainefoliage.com and follow the colors. Fall Foliage is also a Big Time for Cruise Ship Season in Maine. Portland just opened its new 1200ft Ocean Gateway Pier. It will enable 2 large Cruise Ships to berth in the harbor at the same time. This week docked at the Pier was the 960ft Celebrity Summit.Sixty Five Cruise Ships with a record of 92,000 passengers are scheduled into Portland this year. What a boost to the Old Port economy. The Casco Bay Ferry is also running weekend Foliage Cruises from Bailey Island at Cooks Lobster House.
September is also one of the busiest months at the Inn. I think this year it may be busier than July, go figure. We also have so many of our return guests at this time of year. It is so great to see them catching up with each other and sharing with them and us what has happened in the past year. Not only are they chatting at Breakfast they are making Dinner Reservations with each other at the Inn, like they are all Family. Special thanks to Tony and Linda for our new FBI Hats.
Terrence and I got our last dip in the pool on Tuesday before we closed it for the Season this week. It was a great Summer for the pool. Terrence is now jumping off the deep end and swimming to the side and I hold my breath every time until he gets out.
I am off to Fenway this week. Go Red Sox.

Hospitality

We just received this plant and card from one of our guests who checked out today. I don't know if you can read it, but it says "Hospitality is an Art". Inside it says "Hospitality is the art of making others feel welcome, comfortable, and at home. It's the talent for spreading warmth and kindness that will always be remembered. Your hospitality was this and so much more."

All I can say is Thank You Kate. We try very hard to make everyone feel welcome and at home. The Log Cabin has been our "home" for 31 years now, and we love it here. It is a sincere pleasure to share it with all of our guests. All of our Log Cabin guests have become our extended family.....a family that is growing day by day. We, who have the pleasure to "work" here at the Log Cabin are so happy that you who "visit" the Log Cabin can enjoy the magic of the Inn and Bailey Island.

We have had the pleasure of an extremely busy year. We do have some openings for the last week of September and into October (we close the last weekend). So, if you have not visited us yet this year, we would love to see you!

Whoopie!!!

One of my most recent creations is of the Whoopie Pie Tower above. I made 70 pies for a friend's Birthday Party. Little did I think of when I said " Yes" that 70 pies is really 140 cakes because each pie takes 2. Then there were the mistakes and the Dozen or so I kept for home. Most people are saying " What in the world is a Whoopie Pie." Recently it was named the State of Maine Dessert. Can you believe it won over Blueberry Pie. The outside cake is typically chocolate and the filling a Marshmellow Fluff vs Frosting Combination. Many years ago when we were a Restaurant the Whoopie Pie was one for the Bakers Signature Desserts. So now when you visit Maine after your lobster take a Big bite of a Whoopie Pie for Dessert.

An Update on Sue's Hurricane Report is that they got that Big Boat off the beach on the next High Tide, towed it to Portland and there it sits at the Repair Facility. Speaking of Big Boats... The newest Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer built nearby at Bath Iron Works, The USS Spruance sailed down the Kennebec River to the Roar of a Cannon Salute and Patriotic music from the Bath Band. You could stand by the shore at the Maritime Museum and watch it sail by. She is bound for Key West, FL where it will be commissioned in October.
Brunswick Landing (the former Navy Base) has added a new Technology College to its ever growing list of Tenants. We all gathered at the Air Strip last week to watch the Air Show and the Blue Angels perform. What a great sight, the boys were quite impressed.

September brings on one of our busiest months of the year. I was looking and saw that the Wiseman Room isn't available on a weekend til next April. The Pool is still warm and the days are crystal clear. You can't beat the Sunset this time of year either.

Mackeral Cove after Hurricane Irene

Well, I did not have to go far to see some storm damage. On my way to work this morning I saw this huge boat on the beach at the Cove. Apparently, it broke loose from its mooring at midnight at the height of the storm, and was pushed into the beach. In the bottom picture, you can see a lobster boat on the ledges that it wiped out on the way. The locals told me that it hit a few other boats as well. I have not been up the road any further than the Inn, so I don't know of other damage. On the morning news, it sounds like northern and eastern Maine were hit with road damage and flooding. We did not even loose power here! That is a first, as Bailey Island looses power frequently.

So, all is well here at the Inn! Sue

Hurricane Irene

Here is a picture of my Hurricane preparation.....saving some of our "tall" flowers. I also staked some dahlias. Yeah, I know.....my priorities are mixed up. In all seriousness, we will be tying down outside furniture, even though we should not feel the full brunt of the storm. And, of course we do have the very large generator that runs almost everything that we will run from 7am-10pm. I will add to this blog tomorrow or the next day to let all of you know how Bailey Island was affected.

Good Bye my friend.

Some days are easier to get through than others. Last week we said Good Bye to a dear friend of ours. Our friend Tina died after a 6 month battle with Leukemia at the young age of 46. Her family had a Memorial for her at Mackerel Cove. They released these balloons with her ashes and a message to whomever found them to please release the ashes and if they would, call the family and let them know. The Memorial was held on Saturday and on Sunday afternoon the family got a call that the ballons had traveled North from here along the Coast to New Harbor, some 50 miles away. A nice set of grandparents happened along them in their boat with their grandchildren. They had a little service for Tina and let her ashes go near them on Haddock Island. They then called Tina's family to report their findings and sweet story. It is with great certainty that I am sure this is just where Tina would like to be. Maine is such a great place.

After all that emotion in one day many of us hit the Street Dance on Orrs Island. It was the full moon and a wonderful time. That is the picture of Aimee and I above at the Dance. It isn't often that Aimee and I can be at the same place at the same time and a bonus getting picture. The kids had a great time running around the beach and boogieing to the rockin music. Many years ago the Community used to have a Street Dance and now they have brought it back this year. If you are here next year at this time it is a must. Along with the food, beer, wine and dessert the proceedes will benefit a different non profit every year.

If you are already staying here this weekend the must be at event is the Brunswick Outdoor Arts Festival on Maine Street in Brunswick. I am sure if I were here Terrence would be dragging me to the Giant Dragon Tunnel Building or the Interactive Hoola Hooping. But we are heading off tomorrow for our yearly family trip to Mooshead Lake and we are all very excited, even with the chance of showers every day, but it is only a chance.....

New shops

There are a couple new shops in town. The Wheelhouse Cafe opened at the Great Island Boatyard. They have lattes and coffee, sandwiches and baked goods. And, they are owned and run by "locals". It is very cute--worth stopping in. Also, very nearby the new Cafe is a Gallery and craft shop called Ms Etta and Company, also owned and run by "locals". It is great seeing new places open up nearby. All the more reason to take a ride down Route 24.

Some of our room guests are involved in the Walpole Creamery in NH, and brought us samples of different ice creams. Thanks to the Kasper family!

Steamy Days of August

August is proving to be a busy month. The weather has been fabulous, maybe a little to good. The endless days of sun and warmth are doing a job on the lawn, it was becoming brown and crunchy. We did get a couple Thunderstorms this week along with some drizzly rain today that has given the ground cover some much needed rain.
The Beaches in Maine have been filled to capacity, some even having parking problems. Our Cedar Beach saga seems to be at a standstill, negotiations have broken off with the easement purchase but I have faith that it is not over yet.

I am very excited with all the news about Town. The Great State of Maine AirShow will be held at the New Brunswick Landing on the weekend of Aug26th. The Blue Angles will be flying all weekend. We should be able to see the Fireworks Show Friday night from the Inn. In 2008 the Show drew an estimated 150,000 visitors to the area. Two new business' have hung their hat at Brunswick Landing. A Tent and Awning Company that has already filled the building they are in and are under negotiations for an additional building. Southern Maine Community College has signed leases on 5 buildings and will start holding classes this Fall.
We have a new Primary Care and Walk In Clinic that will open this week at the Brunswick Train Station. This is a great bonus to the area as many people can walk to the clinic and it will be on the Downeaster Train line which will have a stop in Brunswick starting in 2012.
Bath Iron Works the local ShipYard which builds Ships for the Navy was just awarded $110 million dollars in funding for work on the 2nd and 3rd ships in the DDG-1000 program. The Iron Works is one of the largest Employers in Maine, this is a great boost for the entire State.

Closer to home Orrs Island will host the very popular Yard Sale and Auction at the Fire Barn this weekend. Also on Orrs Island is the " Moon over Lowell's Cove StreetDance" on SAt the 13th. This is a great fundraiser for the Orrs Island Cemetery. If you around this weekend it is an event you wont want to miss. Lots of Home cooked food, beer, and wine as well as Music til 11pm. It is a family event and all are welcome.

Eagles

Neal and I finally got our boat in the water and ventured out last weekend. We found a little cove to moor in to have our lunch, and I called Matt to see when low tide was. I just happened to look up when I dialed, and was staring at a pair of eagles sitting on a branch. Of course, we had not brought a camera. So, we went back the next day and the branch was empty. Then one landed, and Neal got this shot of it. As I was watching I said "I wonder where the other one is?". Then the second one flew over the trees and circled our boat within feet. Of course, Neal had his head stuck in a cubby hole cleaning....and missed the picture. We will venture out again this weekend. They must have a nest nearby, but we could not see it.

The bottom picture is of one of our room guests (who obviously reads the blog) handiwork. Trust me, it is a joke....we did not bury the Comcast guy. Actually, we need him to come back, so perhaps we should remove the "joke".

We got some much needed rain last night. Maybe the grass will return to green soon. The weather has been fantastic.

Cannoli's

We are trying to get to the bottom of the Cannoli Mystery. A box of Cannoli's were delivered this week overnight from an Italian Pastry Shop in Philadelphia. Anxious to dive into them I read the card and it said " From Bob and Betsy". We do have some very regular guests named Bob and Betsy so we emailed them and they said " No" we didn't send them. Sue then called the Company and they said " Oh no they are from a man named Michael." Now we don't know who Michael is. The cannoli's were wonderful as we shared them with room guests. So Thank You to Michael or whomever sent them. Aimee ( above) is enjoying them as her Breakfast.

Update on the Cedar Beach Saga. The "Friends of Cedar Beach' have stopped negotiations with the property owners. They say all is not forgotten as they will continue to pursue other avenues to purchase the easement.

One day last week I was cooking Breakfast and noticed that we were low on milk. I sent Sue to the local General Store and the next thing I know she came back with this Sea Glass lamp but no milk. She said the lady that owns the store was selling them and she just couldn't resist. Yes it is nice but Where is my milk?

I has been uncomfortably Hot here this week. This great State of Maine is not ready for 90-100 deg temps for days in a row. This is one of the few times I have even been swimming in the Ocean. We are hoping the temps will break tonight and the Weather Man says will bring some below normal temps next week. I for one hope for clouds today as I am on my way to set up the booth for the Nursery School at the Harpswell Festival. This is a Wonderful Festival for children and adults. Tonight they will have a 1970's Disco Band called Motor Booty and they are just fabulous. The music will then be followed by Fireworks. Tomorrow at Mitchell Field as well will be the Lobster Boat Races which you can view from land or sea. A great weekend to be in Harpswell, but aren't they all.

Here are a couple shots of Cedar Beach. I was hoping to have more information on the path to the beach to share, but I have not heard any new news. I do know that the Town of Harpswell, Harpswell Land Trust and the Friends of Cedar Beach are trying to come up with a dollar figure that will buy public access to the beach. The owners originally asked for $950,000, but there are negotiations underway. I certainly hope this all works out for all involved, as it would be a shame for people not to have access to such a beautiful little beach. I am sympathetic to the owners wishes, and so very thankful for all of the years that they have allowed access at no cost.

On a very different note, we have had an extremely frustrating time with Comcast Cable Company. Comcast is changing over its service to digital (I think). Anyhow, we were forced to sign a 5 year contract with them (I say forced as we tried all angles to not do this). Then a Comcast lady in New Hampshire called us and said we needed to set up a time for installation of "boxes". So, we did. And they never showed up. So, we rescheduled, and one guy showed up late with no equipment and said he did not know what he was doing.....so we sent him on his way. Now, we scheduled this around times that would be most convenient for our guests as we are full. So, now, Matt and I are getting really mad.....and trust me, Matt and I do not get mad often, and it is not a pretty picture. So, to make a long story short....after many phone calls(including one to the Attorney Generals consumer office), a sole guy showed up on the third day we scheduled (only one hour late). By this time, Matt and I were seething. Matt said he was going to dig a hole in the back yard and bury the guy if he did not do the job right. Luckily, a very jovial and competent guy named William showed up. Matt said he was too nice to bury, so we offered him filet mignon for dinner if he got the job done. 8 hours later, the job was complete and Matt cooked him his filet and he was on his way! We had informed our very lovely guests about the whole scenario and they took bets on whether William would survive or not. They were happy to see at breakfast the next morning there were no new mounds of dirt in the yard!

Now, Matt is trying to fix the dryer....his job is never ending.

Coconut Cake

Hi, it is Alicia. I know it is not time for a new blog and it is actually Sue's turn but this is a "Special Addition". Our room guests Kim and Kathy brought me 2 whole coconuts as a Culinary Challenge. I figured what is so hard about cooking with 2 coconuts, 4hrs later..... I really wish I wasn't here alone that night because if someone had this on video it would have been the hottest thing on U Tube. Picture me with a Philip's screwdriver and hammer whacking away at the " eye" of the coconut. Then with the back side of a butchers knife trying to get it open. I kept eyeing the bag of shredded coconut I had under the bakers table the whole time I was doing this.

Thinking the hardest part was over I then realized I have to get the coconut out of the shell, peel the outer skin and then grate and shred it. At the same time I was contemplating all this another guest came into the Kitchen talking to me while drinking her Martini and I almost asked her if I could have some.

In the end the cake came out great. Kim and Kathy were very happy and so was I when they gave me a gift card to get books I can use on my Kindle. Next Coconut Cake is coming from the store.

But I am cooking a Blueberry Pie right now.

Our returning guests will be happy to hear that there is still public access to Cedar Beach. Cedar Beach is a nice sandy beach within walking distance of the Inn. The "Friends of Cedar Beach" are in negotiations with the property owner to buy an easement to retain public access to the Beach. Many local and " people from away" use this beach as it is the only sandy beach in the area. Stay tuned for the Fundraising events to buy the easement. If interested you can visit the groups Facebook page.

So much to do this weekend. It is Celebrate Summer in Harpwell. Thirty Three local art, crafts,food and music venues will hold an Open House. You can find a full list of activities at www. harpswellmaine.org. The Bowdoin College Music Festival along with their Professional Theatre Group is in full swing.
Every Wednesday in Downtown Brunswick they are having free outdoor concerts from
6pm-8pm.
I see the Casco Bay Ferry going by the Inn every day and it looks like quite a few people are enjoying a nice 2hr ride.

We have had some fabulous weather lately. The pool has been busy. I actually made the first trip of the season, it is so nice and warm. The flowers are blooming like crazy. Sue is complaining about watering them and I tell her that is what you get for buying so many. My son Terrence is in the photo above working for his pool time.

Since it is my turn to write the blog I will give 10% off the room price to anyone who books the Harpswell Room any time during the last two weeks in August. It is a 3 night minimum. Now I am going in the kitchen to enjoy some fresh roasted corn salad on a bed of lettuce from the farm.

Eight years ago today, my grandson Danny was born. He is a very bright and funny child, and he is so loved by our whole family (including his little brother, Josh). For those of you who do not know, Dannys parents, Matt and Aimee, and I all work together here at the Inn.....so, Danny and Josh are here often and just live up the road. I am one lucky grandmother!!

I took this picture from the pool at 6am. This is a perfect pool day...hot and sunny. The pool is 84 degrees and you can enjoy the view of the 60 degree ocean. A few hardy souls do swim in the ocean....myself, I prefer the pool.

Fourth of July weekend, and there are many folks here on the island. We are full fortunately....gas prices have not stopped our clientele so far. We do have some rooms left in July, so come see us!

Molnlycke breaks ground

Rain, rain and more rain. It seems two years ago in June all it did was rain. I am glad the guests are visiting us despite the rain. No Vacancy this weekend. Sue likes the rain because it is less work for her with all those flowers to water. One of my favorite flowers has made an appearance this week, the Peonie. It always reminds me of my Grandmother and all her bushes when I was growing up.

I made a very yummy Lobster Newburg this evening for some long time guests celebrating their Anniversary. I even snuck in some kohlrabi I got at the Farm Share in their salad. They topped off Dinner with Strawberry Rhubarb Pie and Homemade Strawberry Ice Cream, a true Maine Feast.

A Swedish firm called Molnlycke has broke ground at Brunswick Landing ( former Navy Base) this week. It is a Health Care firm that will manufacture Medical Supplies. They propose a 79,000 sq foot research and production facility with more than 100 new jobs.The pace of the base redevelopment has reached unprecedented levels in comparison to similar projects at other closing Military properties. It is great to hear planes flying again. One gentleman flew in from Ohio this week so he could go shopping at LL Bean and take back some lobster. This is all such a boost to the local economy which finds its way to Harpswell.

It is the start of Strawberry Season here in Maine. I challenge any guest to go to one of our local U Pick Strawberry Fields, bring me back the Strawberry's and I will make you a Pie. I may be sorry I said this.

33rd Anniversary

Well, today is Neal and my 33rd anniversary...hard to believe! Just like it is hard to believe this is our 31st year at the Log Cabin!

Yes, I know.....more garden pictures....but, honestly, the yard is spectacular right now. The blue garden features iris, false indigo, lupine....with rosa rugosa behind it, and in the background, the Miss Kim lilac are beautiful. The red maple I planted in my Dads memory. Oh, and the other picture is of the very large wisteria by our pool. The blossoms are hitting the ground there are so many.

Speaking of Dad, that is where Neal and I got married...in his yard. He lived in the house right beside the Bailey Island bridge. The day was sunny and nice--just like today! Back then, I was running Rock Ovens and Rock Ovens II (which is now where Rob Williams real estate office is). Actually, that is where Neal and I are having dinner tonight, but now it is called Morses Cribstone Grille. It is nice to see it open again after 2 years of bridge repair. I hated looking at that cute little building empty.

Hidden in Harpswell

The Harpswell Art and Craft Guild is alive and well here in Town. There are over 20 Art Members that have studios in Harpswell. They range from 11 working studios, 5 galleries, 3 photographers, and some yummy candy. The shops have very distinctive blue and white signs with a blue heron on it. Make sure to stop and see some delightful surprises. You can find out more about the Guild on the Studio's and Galleries Page at www.harpswellmaine.org

Last Saturday was full of activities. Terrence, Jon and I attended the Fly In at the new Brunswick Landing Airport. Officials were hoping to have a dozen private planes on hand to look at and they were beyond thrilled when over 100 planes flew in just for fun and to take a look at the runway. What once was forbidden fruit is now a reality. One man said he has bought a house in Harpswell and will fly his plane here rather than drive from Washington D.C. People can now fly in for a lobster lunch or a stay at the Log Cabin and off they go, so convenient. They even had a Falcon and Leer Jet there. Then we went to the " Duck Race" this was a Fundraiser for the local Elementary School. This event also was more than organizers could have hoped for. Over 430 Ducks were sold and raised over $7,000 for the PTO. One of the great prizes was a Night Stay and $100 Gift Certificate at the Log Cabin.

This was a warm week in Maine. Many people were in the pool. We almost needed Air Conditioning one day. That all changes in a day though, today was beautiful in the 70's with a breeze. The flowers are going crazy. This week the Iris' are out. They almost look fake. The Yellow Garden has a few rare Yellow Iris'. I would take a picture but I want you to use your imagination. School is getting out this coming week and now it is time to find things for the kiddo's to do , like Stovers Cove and the pool. I hope it is as nice as last Summer.

Events and milestones

Well the Brunswick Naval Air Station officially closed this week. Here is the new sign for the Brunswick Landing and Executive Airport. I just drove around the base, and it was quite sad. There are very few cars and people. This will be a very different scene tomorrow as the former base is having a Brunswick International Fly-In, with an open house, music, food and displays from 8am-4pm. And, the Redevelopment Authority that is overseeing the transformation of the Base holds commitments from businesses looking to invest a combined $150 million in the near future. So, sometime in the future, it will be a bustling place again.

Other new things in the area are an Ice Cream stand near Lands End....Morses have opened the restaurant by the Bailey Island bridge, and of course the Dolphin restaurant in South Harpswell has rebuilt and is open (and beautiful).

Most important are 2 events.....today, my grandson Josh graduates from Nursery school. It is a good thing I am working and not attending, as I would cry my eyes out. How can he be 5 and ready for "big school"? And the second event is the Duck Race at the Great Island Boat Yard tomorrow from 2-5. This is a fundraiser for my older grandson Danny's school. There will be food and entertainment, and of course a Duck Race (rubber ducks). One of the prizes is a night stay at the Log Cabin Inn on Bailey Island (hope I don't win that one). If I do, I will give it to one of you!

Must go plant some flowers.....somehow, my car is full of plants again! Sue

Memorial Day Weekend

Memorial Day Weekend is here and what I think of as the official kickoff to the Summer Season. The area motels are open along with the ice cream shops, art galleries, restaurants and my favorite Yard Sales. Now you know it is me, Alicia and not Sue with the Yard Sale comment. Speaking of Restaurants.. after several years of suffering the bridge construction we finally have a new Restaurant open on the Island right at the Bridge. It opens today and it is called " Morse's Cribstone Grill." The Morse family ran Estes Restaurant last year and they also have a Drive In Diner in Brunswick. I look forward to trying out the new place, can't beat that view. Also did you know that is the Restaurant Sue used to own before she bought this building? It was then called Rock Ovens.

Memorial Day Weekend also is a sign of Bowdoin College Graduation. It is so nice to see the parents start staying with us Freshman Year and up here on Graduation Day. We even have many parents who continue to stay after the kids graduate. I don't think they tell the kids they still come.
The pool is open and I am still waiting for the first one in. I think I will give the first one in the pool a Log Cabin Coffee Mug ( sorry Sue).
Sad about the Navy Base decommissioning on Tuesday. I am confident that the Town will put the space to good use. The Golf Course has been bought and they have reworked all the greens and T Boxes. The Teaching Pro has taken over as General Manager and is redoing the ClubHouse as well. You can't beat the price and close location for a 9 Hole Course.

The " Garden Fairies" have been here all week and the place is blooming all around us. The lilacs are about to burst, a little late, but to me is a sure sign of Memorial Day. So Thank You to all who have served our Country as this weekend is a sure sign of Beautiful things to come.

Fiddleheads and ramps

I love spring! The flowers, the food, the temperature, all of it. We bought fiddleheads and ramps this week. For those of you who are not familiar (many of our present guests were not), a fiddlehead is a young fern which is harvested for only 2 weeks. In the picture beside the fiddleheads is a few ramps. Ramps are a wild onion, or a wild leek. We sauteed some fiddleheads and ramps together, and they were quite nice. Also in the picture is strawberry rhubarb pie.....with rhubarb grown right here at the Inn. We also made a potato and ramp soup which was tasty.

The other picture is the beginning of my garden shopping. We have had a long spell or rain, mist and fog. Usually, I have most of the gardens planted by now. The sun is just beginning to burn through the fog right now, and the forecast is for a warm week, so I will begin to plant this afternoon.

We have a full house this weekend, and remarkably, the guests are not complaining about the weather. We always have a good natured group here at the Log Cabin.

So, here is to spring! Off to get my garden trowel, Sue

Pool is Open

That time of year again and the pool is open. Which might be nice if you were in Florida or North Carolina but here in Maine we still don't have all the screens on the windows.
The tulips are in full bloom and they are so pretty, several different colors and patterns. As you know I complain often about Sue and her flowers but they sure look pretty right now. Matt has made great progress with the raised beds and has one more to complete. Another reason I know it is approaching Summer Season is that I made the first Strawberry Rhubarb Pie of the Season. Matt was patiently waiting for the first piece. The Candy Store on Orrs Island is now open and we have a new Ice Cream Shop on Bailey Island near Lands End.

Another update on my Navy Base Project. Southern Maine Community College has held its first class this week on the Base. It is called "Intro to Composites" provided by Resilent Communication which also is operating from the Base property. The composite industry is very important to Maine because it supports so much of our lobster and Marine Business. Resilent will actually manufacture composite boxes which will transport sensitive communications equipment.
If you are an airplane buff we still have 3 rooms left for the June 4th weekend when there will be a "Fly In" open to the public on Base.

We have No Vacancy tonight which is very thrilling. It has also been a very busy weekend for Dinners. If you have never eaten here, you don't know what you are missing, especially if you are lucky enough to catch a Sunset like the one above.

Cobblestones and spring bulbs

Matt is hard at work installing the cobblestones. The weather this week has not cooperated, but the bulbs sure liked the rain! Now that it is sunny, they are all opening. As you can see in the pictures, Daisy is assisting Matt with the job.

It is a beautiful sunny and warm day here today. Mothers Day weekend.....I cannot believe it--seems we just opened! Time flies.

The farmers market is open in Brunswick for the season. It is such a great market....plants, Maine made cheeses, Maine beef, all sorts of vegetables, jellies, baked goods. It is downtown on the Mall on Tuesdays and Fridays and at Crystal Spring Farm on Saturdays. It is so nice to have locally grown products. We are blessed with many excellent farms in this area.

I must go to town before they close up for the day!

Royal Wedding

What a week for Royalty. Can you believe Billions of people were glued to the TV watching Prince William and Princess Kate. Well I had my own bit of Royalty here on Bailey Island. I performed a Wedding Ceremony ( notaries can do this in Maine) for some room guests at the Giant Stair Case this week. Not much for media there but I am sure our bride and groom are just as happy in the picture above.

Here is my Bi Weekly Navy Base update. The closure is set for May 30th. It will be renamed Brunswick Landing and scored a Major deal this week. The American Bureau of Shipping has signed on. They establish qualifications for ship officers, classify and register merchant vessels and applies safety standards to proposed ship designs through computer modeling. They are based in Houston and have 200 offices in over 70 Countries. What better company to set their roots in Brunswick.

Sue has purchased 9,000lbs of granite pavers. Matt can attest to this as he and his friend Justin had to unload them. We are going to replace the old railroad ties that are around the front flower beds. What a great look this will be approaching the building. The Bridge crew finished up this week, laying seed and hay and finishing a beautiful looking fence that leads to the Ocean on the South Side. Today is the nicest, warmest day this Spring and we have No Vacancy, a great thing for the last day in April.

In the Kitchen I am making Chocolate Coconut Ice Cream. With wonderful dark Mexican Chocolate given to us by a room guest. I can handle chocolate once again as I had given it up for lent and the tempting was just to much. Now I am heading in to cook some Filets and Lobster Tails for our very wonderful guests the Delany's who are celebrating their 23rd Wedding Anniversary.

Bailey Island Bridge

Here are some pictures I took this morning of the newly renovated Bailey Island bridge. The top one was taken from Garrison Cove (which by the way was where I learned to swim when I was six.....and where my Aunt ran the Square Deal restaurant for 40 years.....but that is another story). For those of you who do not know, the bridge has been under renovation for the past 2 years. They built a temporary bridge beside it, and are finally taking away the last of the temporary bridge now. The second picture is of the new steps that were constructed on the south end of the bridge (by the old Rock Ovens restaurant which was also in my family for decades). The last picture is standing on the south end looking out at sunrise.

I will be so glad when all of the construction trailers and equipment are gone. I ran the above mentioned Rock Ovens for several years, and have not enjoyed seeing what is such a beautiful spot all a mess.....which, I realize is inevitable with construction. I just have trouble looking at "mess", and will be glad to see it all gone. The "Rock Ovens" is suppose to reopen this year. It is no longer in my family, and I am not sure what is will be called, or exactly when it will open. It will be nice to have another restaurant on the island.

Well, it is Easter weekend. We have been open for 3 weeks now. The yard is looking great....green grass, daffodils blooming, almost time to go flower shopping! Must go do some Inn tasks.

Back for the Season

Hi all it is Alicia and after a Very enjoyable Winter I am back to the Log Cabin. The funny thing about this place it is like you never left. We have a full house tonight, not bad for the middle of April and only 42 deg out. The nice thing is that 7 out of the 9 rooms are return guests and we warmly welcome our new guests. Above I added a photo taken yesterday of the snow on the top of Mt. Washington in N.H. from the Inn.

The reservations have been steadily coming in this week. The amazing thing is that we have already booked 80 room nights for next year. Sue didn't even have a 2012 book started yet. If the Merriconeag Room is your choice for next Summer you should call now because it is taken July 22- August 13th of next year.

Returning after the Winter it can be what some people may think as a small thing that really excites me. Like after many many years with the same white Restaurant plates Sue got some jazzy new plates along with placemats and napkins. We also changed to a local organic coffee called Wicked Joe's it is surely a big hit. We are also sporting some fancy new aprons Sue got, see I told you it was the little things. The Inn just became Re Certified as an "Environmental Leader."
I will be whipping up some specials on the weekend like tonights Wild Salmon with Key Lime Butter Sauce.

Locally I am sad to have the Navy Base be decommissioned this May but am excited about all the new activity at the Base. The Base is now open to the public so you can drive right on and check it out. The 9 Hole Golf Course is still open and if you are so lucky to have your own plane you can now fly in to Brunswick and stay at the Log Cabin. Return guests and garden angels

Well, we have been open one week now. What a change a week makes. Opening day, we had a huge snowstorm...today it is in the 60's and my "garden angels" are out working in the gardens. And, they are working in just a Tshirt! (Well, pants too.) The bulbs are up and starting to bloom. It is very exciting!

Two of our four rooms that are rented for tonight are "regulars".....guests that have been coming for years. I checked the computer this morning and one guest has come 21 times, and the other 17 times! Our return guest percentage is off the charts. So is the percentage of occupancy. I tell guests that I will print the next years reservation book when we open for the season. The first week we have already booked 58 room nights for 2012.

Matt put the outdoor furniture in place yesterday and 3 of the rooms have been enjoying their porches today. It is a wonderful life here at the Log Cabin. Bailey Island is certainly showing off her beauty today.

Open for the Season--31st year

Well, here we are.....first day of the Log Cabins 31st year......and another big snow storm. I say another, as we frequently have a storm the day we open the Log Cabin. It is kind of an island joke. Matt didn't find it a joke as he is driving the snow plow in the picture, and had to shovel all of the walks and decks. And it is a very heavy, wet snow. The good news is, it is letting up and turning to rain. The weather forecast for the next few days is in the 40's, so it should melt quickly. I wonder how my many little crocus are doing under there?

I have yet to walk through all the rooms as my niece, Dawn, is still doing her magic and last minute finishing touches. She has been quite busy with the redecorating. I am sure it looks great!

Our room rates have changed a bit for the first time in several years starting today. Each room will be an extra $10/night. With all expenses increasing each year, we needed to make a modest increase in prices. The price increase begins today (not on existing reservations).

Well, I must do some confirmations.....have taken many reservations this week.

Final week til we open!

Sorry for the late blog......you must have thought I fell off the earth! Well, I went to the "Southernmost Point" for 10 days. When I left there was a ton of snow at the Inn, so I had to import a last years picture for the blog. But, this morning I found our first crocus starting to bloom. Then I had to run around the yard to see what else was starting to grow. I just LOVE this time of year!! New growth, new start, new season.

So, after the yard inspection, I went inside to see all of Matt and Aimee's magic. The place looks super. I know, it always looks super when we are open. But, if you could see the work it takes when we are closed, you would appreciate it more. They are both perfectionists, and it shows. Thanks guys!

I spent several hours answering emails and phone messages and entering new reservations in the computer.

Our big news of the week, is our long awaited new web cam is up and running. Go to our home page, and click on web cam. It takes a second to load, and you only get to watch for 90 seconds at a time. We may adjust that, just have to see how it goes. We are streaming it on an outside server so it is a better picture. Very exciting!

So, this was a very happy day for me. New web cam, flowers coming out, Inn looks super.

Spring is on the way!

I just could not help myself. The winter seems endless this year. So, I had to dig out a picture from last year. I cannot wait to start gardening! The flower catalogs are coming in, and these companies know that I cannot resist when it comes to plants!

I was just at the Inn cleaning up the office. Aimee has the gift shop all set up--it looks great. The gift show is this weekend, so I will go find some new items for the shop. I just love this time of year, when we put the Log Cabin back together, and it is all fresh and clean. Not sure how much of the yard we will be able to clean up. There are still snowbanks in places.

We are approaching 40% full for the season. Not bad for not even being open yet! So, if you have not reserved, give us a call!

Signs of Spring on Bailey Island

I decided to find some sign of Spring to post on the blog. Trust me, I had to look hard. Yesterday, I noticed buds on my brothers lilacs. I could not quite believe it. So, today, I went to the Inn to see if the bush there had buds as well. I had to climb a huge snow bank to get to the bush, and lo and behold, BUDS!!!! I guess that is what it means to be under a "blanket of snow". I am going to take this as a good sign that Spring will indeed be here soon. As I am writing this, the clouds are rolling in and a winter storm is on the way. There is question as to how much precipitation and if we will get rain or snow. I am hoping for rain!

The sparrows are nesting in the bird houses on the Inn as well.

The bottom picture is taken from the Harpswell Town House. As you can see, there is a lot of ice in bay still.

Progress on the Bailey Island bridge

I have been anxious to see how the temporary bridge was actually going to disappear. Boy, are they busy doing just that today! The top two pictures are of the bridge workers taking apart both sides. They are even taking the huge cement bases out. And a local contractor is lugging the huge boulders away at the same time. I would say at this rate, there will be little left when we open the Inn on April 1st.

Then they will have to clean up the site where all of their trailers and equipment has been for the past 2 years. There is rumor that the former "Rock Ovens" restaurant is suppose to open too. But, you never can trust rumor on Bailey Island. When I hear for sure, I will let you know. It would be nice to have another restaurant on the island. For those of you who do not know, that restaurant was in my family for decades. I even ran it for 7 years before opening the Log Cabin in 1980.

The third picture was taken from Cooks Point of the newly renovated bridge. And finally, the last picture is of Matt, busy at work painting and caulking one of the bathrooms. All 9 rooms will have a fresh paint job when we open (which is in 43 days).

We are ordering a new web cam for the Inn this week. The existing one is acting up, so we are upgrading. Hopefully it will be up and running soon. And, it is a much better quality, so we are hoping the picture will be much nicer.

February snow

Hard to believe that Josh plowed that huge snow bank with his little truck, eh? Don't tell the Labor Dept. that we have him working at age 5!

Of course, Daisy helped him too. Actually, Aimee was doing her part, and Matt was headed to the Inn also.

The bottom picture is of Mackeral Cove in the fresh snow. I know it was a very large storm for most of the country. We got lots of fluff fortunately, not ice. The drifts are really magnificent. The island is very pretty today. I may go take a few more shots.

Beginning to wonder if all of this will melt before April. Another storm is predicted for Saturday. We open in 56 days! The reservations are coming in at a rapid pace....going to be a busy year. Matt and Aimee are painting the rooms, so they should be ship shape!

Bailey Island Winter

These chairs are not looking so inviting at the moment. We have had several snowstorms so far this winter. This last one was all powder, and the drifts are spectacular, especially with the sun shining on them. The colors are the thing I love about this time of year. The ocean is so blue in contrast to the snow.

Matt is home from his ski trip to Colorado. He, Danny and Josh plowed me out yesterday in the plow truck. Then Matt and Danny shovelled our porch. Josh dug his toy plow truck out from the sandbox and did his part plowing the deck. It was priceless.

They are predicting another large storm for Wednesday, but are not sure of the track yet. I am suppose to go to a seminar on marketing online. We will see if it gets cancelled.

Calm before the storm

Although it is quite cold today, as you can see the sun is bright and the wind is calm. Our forecast for tomorrow is not so nice.....snow, sleet, freezing rain. We have been lucky so far this winter with no ice.

It has been a very busy day for reservations. I have taken 6 so far....September being the popular month. We are over 50% full for September already! The rest of the season is filling up fast as well. This is quite exciting as it is still January!

The temporary bridge is coming down slowly. Cooks restaurant has been closed for a couple weeks for renovations--opening this Friday. I will go check it out. The Bailey Island store and Giant Stairs grill have stayed open all winter. It is nice to have a few places right on the island to get a meal. Of course, Maine Street Brunswick still supports dozens of places to eat as well. Lodging and restaurant sales were up over 4% in Maine from the previous year. I think the Brunswick area has contributed more than their fair share!

Bailey Island's major intersection

This sign just cracks me up! First of all, it has only been a few years since we had names for our roads on the island. They were established for 911. Although I am sure it has made the UPS guy happy. This is the only "street" sign the State decided was necessary on the island.....for the life of me I cannot figure out why. The island is only 2 miles long, and the speed limit is 30 mph. I would think you could read the signs as you were driving, without a "warning" sign from the State. And, of course, we named our "road" a lane. It is Log Cabin Lane, not Log Cabin Road. The Log Cabin is the only property on this "road". But, because we have 3 separate buildings, 911 wanted us to name it and number the buildings. So, we are 5, 7, and 9 Log Cabin Lane. But, anyhow, thanks to the State DOT for giving potential guests fair warning that the Log Cabin is coming up on the right by the oncoming curve! So, now when people ask where we are on the island we can say right after the new curve sign, instead of half mile past the bridge!

Abner Point on Bailey Island

I just took my dogs for a walk to the end of Abner Point. It is sunny and 40 degrees today. What a contrast to Monday when it was snowing and blowing 50 mph and 10 degrees. Even the dogs did not go far that day. Tomorrow is New Years Eve! 2010 was a very busy and eventful year for us at the Log Cabin. No big events for 2011....yet.

Alicia leaves for Florida tomorrow until April. My grandson Josh will be sad, as Alicia's son, Terrence, is his good buddy.

Matt continues to do repairs at the Inn. I continue to take reservations. Looks like another busy year for us.

Lots of interest in the Brunswick Naval Air Station. There are many companies vying for space, as well as Bowdoin College. The navy will be missed, however.

No big plans for me for New Years Eve. Hope all of you have a safe and healthy new year.

Temporary bridge

Now that the "new" Bailey Island bridge is complete, the bridge workers are slowly taking apart the temporary bridge. Although I watched them build the temporary bridge, I cannot figure out why they are taking the road away from the structure first.....seems it should be the other way around to me. But then, I am an innkeeper, not a bridge engineer. I am sure they know what they are doing. I will keep you posted on the progress.

Speaking of progress, can it be we have been closed for almost 2 months? Let's see.....that means we open again in 99 days! Yahoo!! Can you tell that I love the Inn? I love everything about it.....the building, the view, the crew, the guests....oh yeah, and the gardens.

Christmas is next week. My grandson Josh turns 5 this week (speaking of time flying). His nursery school holiday pageant is Wednesday. Of course, I will attend. Last year he sat in his Mom's lap and watched....we will see this year if he participates. It is very cute either way.

Mackeral Cove

Winter on Bailey Island looks so different than it does in the summer. Boats are pulled out of the water, lobster men take their traps up and put them on land. There are very few buoys in the bay. One lobster man told me this weekend that they take their traps out of the bay so the shrimpers can drag the bay for shrimp. There is nothing better than Maine shrimp right out of the water. They are a bit messy to cook, and tedious to pick as they are small, but yummy.We serve local Maine shrimp and Maine scallops on our dinner menu. Both of these are caught in the winter.

We still have no snow on the island. We did just have a heavy rain storm that would have been a ton of snow had the temperature been cold. But last night and today, the temperature has been in the 50's! I am sure the snow is coming soon enough.

Best of the best survey

Here is a picture of the plaque we received as well as the announcement that was in the Times Record newspaper. We were voted best Bed and Breakfast in Midcoast Maine for 2010. And, believe me, there are many bed and breakfasts! We thank all of you who voted for us!

We are getting our first snow of the season today. It is not much snow, but it is covering the ground. I do still have some snapdragons blooming and rose buds in the gardens. They are seeing how long they can hold out. Northern Maine is getting a much bigger storm. It will be interesting to see what winter brings. Last year we had a very mild winter.

All is well on Bailey Island. They are taking apart the temporary bridge. Matt is busy with projects at the Inn. He is rebuilding the window boxes on the Sunset and Westview rooms. All the money was raised for the Bailey Island Post Office this month. So, now it is officially owned by the donors. Thanks to those of you who donated to that cause.

Bailey Island morning

Today is crystal clear and calm. These photos were taken from Cook's point early this morning. You can see the bridge, which is now open to traffic. The renovated bridge is the same width that it was before renovation. The temporary bridge was quite a bit wider! For anyone that has crossed the original bridge knows, it is very narrow. I would say that many drivers got used to the temporary width, and forgot how to drive on the original. You really do have to stay in your lane, and not cross the center lines, or 2 vehicles cannot pass. The Department of Transportation tried to convince the towns people to make it wider, but this was voted down. So, a word of warning.....if you are coming to Bailey Island, stay in your lane. Many a rear view mirror has been lost on the bridge over the years.

We still have not had a hard frost on Bailey Island. There are still a few flowers blooming in the gardens. We have much milder weather than Brunswick, which has had a hard frost, and had sleet last Friday.

Reservations are steadily coming in. Remember, a gift certificate to the Log Cabin would make a super gift for the holidays!

Grand opening of the Bailey Island Bridge

Here a some pictures of the bridge opening last Saturday morning. It was a very cold, windy day. After the "dignitaries" spoke, there was an antique car show! It was worth the wait to see the many antique cars cross the bridge. The temporary bridge will still be standing until April so the bridge workers can do some finish work. I will be so excited to see the temporary bridge disappear....it is very unattractive. The newly reconstructed bridge is beautiful. I drove across it this morning for the first time, and was very excited. It has been 2 years since they began working on it.

As you can see, there was a very large crowd attending.

November color

The sunset picture I just took (yes it is 4:30), and the cove picture I took a couple hours ago. We have had astronomical high tides the past week. The cove picture was actually an hour after high tide. You can see the debris on the boat launch....there is absolutely no beach at high tide! I thought the water was going to cross the road some days. And the floats and boats are all pulled up on the beach for the winter. The lobster men are still fishing, although the extreme winds have kept them in most of the week. We had a "rogue" storm Sunday night that knocked out power and caused considerable damage. It seems we have had many damaging wind storms this season.

But, the sunsets in the fall are really spectacular, even if they are in the afternoon. We have had extremely good weather this year despite the storms. Wonder what is in store for winter?

Well, Matt drained the water at the Inn today, and turned off all heat and gas. The building is ready for it's off season nap. I am sure Matt and Aimee will wake it up often to do the off season maintenance.

Reservations continue to come in for next season....we must be approaching 30% full. Give us a call is you would like to come visit. Also, remember that a Log Cabin Inn gift certificate makes a great holiday present!

End of the season

Well, our 30th year in business has ended for the season. We must have known the weather was going to take a turn. It sure is chilly out the past couple days! We had a great season, and by the looks of the reservation book for 2011, we will have another busy one next year.

This picture is of the "crew", Josh, Danny, Laura, Aimee, Alicia, Emily, myself and Matt. This was 10am on closing day. By 2pm, we had the rooms stripped, gift shop packed up, bar boxed up, kitchen stuff boxed and moved, outside furniture put away, and actually had time for pizza in there too! Now we start on our "fix-it list". Matt started today by cutting the big spruce in the front yard. We will plant a new garden there next spring. Now he is out back chopping down sumac. Aimee came in to do some leftover laundry and dishes. The place looks a bit barren, but clean.

Time for a long winter nap for me! I will check the phone and email daily if anyone would like to make a reservation for next year!

Harvest Time

As I reflect on this past season I think this year the food meant more to me than any other year. Many of you know that we have a small Vegetable and Herb Garden on the South Side of the lawn. This year we also augmented it with buying a Crop Share at Crystal Springs Farm in Brunswick. Sue went every Friday and came back with a load of vegetables that she then in turn would challenge me to use. I thought the Crop Share was such a great idea that I bought in for my house. You would arrive at the Farm on a Tues or Fri and many baskets would be set up to chose from. Then they open up the gardens and you could pick several different things each week. They always had herbs and flowers but could also have tomato's or green beans, etc.
They sell different things at the Farm as well such as eggs, milk, lamb, pork and beef. Last year I bought a full share of lamb. This year I am giving the lamb a break and bought 1/2 share on a pig. We just got the pork delivered and I had some chops last night that were the biggest I have ever seen and oh so good.

It is so exciting to see that we can eat and provide so much of our menu at the Inn locally. We get our lobster every day from a friend and local lobsterman. Our scallops are caught by another friend right here in Casco Bay. Both the shrimp and haddock are native to Maine and we have a better Filet than most Steak House's. Sue has challenged me with some very tasty Dinner Specials this Season and it was great to try new things. I know many people have not been able to take advantage of our Dining Room but I think if you are here between 6-6:30pm you will not be sorry that you chose us. Especially when you don't have to drive anywhere and our desserts are also made here.

Six more nights and we close. As usual Terrence and I will be headed to Florida for Jan, Feb, and March. I will let Aimee do all the work opening up and return in April when the mess is cleaned up.

October nor'easter on Bailey Island

This has been an eventful week. These two pictures were taken on Friday morning. We had a huge rain and wind storm, and as usual, the power went out just as Alicia was cooking breakfast! So, she balanced a flashlight on her head so she could see what she was doing! We called Matt to come turn on the generator.....which he did.....then said he had to go take pictures of the ocean. He also did his first video and uploaded it to You Tube. If you go to You Tube and type in Bailey Island October 2010 nor'easter, it will come up. It is quite good.

I also went to the Harpswell Business Association meeting this week at Two Coves Farm in South Harpswell. They raise grass fed beef, chickens, sheep and turkeys. I ordered a turkey for Thanksgiving and will try out their other products. Perhaps you will see some local foods on our menu next year! It is a beautiful 80 acre farm on the ocean....worth taking a drive to see.

We had a busy weekend here....but slowing down during the week days. We close 2 weeks from today! All for now, Sue

Holiday Weekend

Hi it is Alicia. I think Sue was drinking when she did that last blog because even I can't figure out her math. Her " Surprise" Party wasn't much of a Surprise. Sue told Aimee and I practically how to organize it. When, What, Where, the food, guests,budget ( which there was none) etc. The Party was absolutely fantastic, the Music which was a surprise made for some great entertainment. Above is a photo of her two Brothers, Bob is on the left and came up from Cape Cod and Bruce is on the right and lives here on Bailey Island. Aimee and I told Sue we are going on a Cruise for her 70th, no more party planning.

I know quite a few guests went to the Alpaca Farm this Summer. Now you need to go no further than Front Street in Bath to visit a new Store called " Winters Gone" that will carry Alpaca Fashions. There is also a Seafood Market that (re)opened near Shaws called Long Reach Shellfish. They have a quite a variety and will pack lobsters to travel, although you can not eat there like at Gurnet Trading. Then there is my new favorite Gourmet Deli called the " Market Basket" ( not the grocery store) It is located on Park Row in Brunswick just parallel to Maine St. We catered some items there for Sue's Party and it was so yummmyy. You can eat there or take out. The pastries, sandwich's and smoked seafood are a few favorites. Oh and one more thing smoked sun dried tomato spread.

The weekends are still remaining full. We do have some openings on our last weekend Oct 29th and 30th. We also have some nights available during the week. If you have been reading the blogs or have been here you know some weird stuff goes on. This AM while I was bringing my cleaning basket to a room I looked over and one of the room guests was on the lawn playing bagpipes. It was there first visit here, came without a reservation and apparently felt right at home. I wish it was last week during my Anniversary because the bagpiper piped us out of the Church.

It was neck and neck with my last question. The pool heater was not off but has since been winterized, it got some great use this Summer.

Milestones and Decades

The year 2010 brings many milestones. Like the 30th year for the Log Cabin (20 + 10).
Matt and Aimee both turn 40 (20 + 10 + 10).
My brother had his 50th wedding anniversary (20 + 20 + 10).
Matt and Aimee will have their 10th anniversary (20 - 10).
My grandson Josh will turn 5 (20 - 10/2).
And, this week, I will turn 60 (20 + 20 + 20)!!!!!!

I hear from a little birdy, that a surprise birthday party is in the works. I have tried bribery to get info on the details, but to no avail. I guess that is what will make it a surprise!! I have had birthday parties here at the Log Cabin for 30 years now (that being half of my life.....60 - 20 - 10)! Where did the years go? Life has been very good to me. I have a super family, many wonderful friends, an Inn that I love, and hundreds of Inn guests that make life and work a joy. Thanks to all of you who are in my life.

The weather forecast is good for a party, and some flowers have been delivered. I am very anxious for tomorrow. Will let you know the details.

Apple Season a Bust

You never know what you will see while sitting in your Hot Tub at the Inn. This is a photo of my Brother in Law, Fred flying around the Island and entertaining both himself and quite a few people on the ground.

Apple Season is here and the growers have taken a huge hit. One grower said that he had lost 90% of the crop due to a late frost in May. Aimee and I went on the kids Apple/ Hay Ride Fieldtrip this week and the only thing plentiful was the pumpkins. It was such a warm Summer that the pumpkins came early. Some growers could even plant a second crop. According to the growers the trunks froze and all the blossoms toward the bottom of the trees froze. So if you are lucky and tall like Matt you could pick them using a ladder. Mother Nature who can figure her out. Like today, it is 80 deg in the end of September.

We are open only 35 more days this season. Every year it seems like it goes faster and faster. I am very happy to say we have had 100% occupancy this September, can't do much better than that. September is beating out August.

The whole town is a buzz and very happy for our local standout Mark Rogers who is pitching with the Milwaukee Brewers. He has closed a couple games with no hit innings and started his first game last night against the Florida Marlins.

The answer to the pole question was Florida, which 66% got right. The Withlaooochee River is both in North Central and Central Florida.

Sunrise

The sun is just rising at the same time I arrive at work now. The days are shorter, and brisk. We even had to light the fireplace one day. I love this time of year! Only problem is that we close in 6 more weeks. I get asked frequently if I am anxious to close, and the answer is "No". I love the Log Cabin. Our crew is the best anyone could ask for. Our guests are the most amazing people. I also love to cook breakfast. Today I am making waffles, ham and banana pecan muffins. Laura will be in shortly to make the fruit. This morning all 9 rooms are return guests---making it feel like one big family.

Last night was a silent auction for the Harpswell Community Nursery School. I was very brave and gave Aimee and Alicia a signed check and told them they could bid for me. I wonder what I bought, and how much I spent? Will let you know.

September 11

Today is such a glorious day with the sun shinning and a slight breeze. It was just like Sept 11th nine years ago. It was one of those days that everyone will remember and I am no different. Jon and I were still working on a Yacht together and we had just left Montauk, Long Island, NY headed to Nantucket when we heard. We just couldn't believe it, our Boss at the time owned all the fiber optics layed in NYC and his office was Downtown. We tried several times to reach him but all phone lines were tied up. Finally the next day we heard that he was safe and not yet made it to work when the Towers came down. A very good friend of ours, Larry Silverstein owned the Twin Towers. The devastation that he and his family had to endure was unbearable. They have already rebuilt 7 World Trade Plaza and have tenants occupying the building. It is truly a beautiful place with a park and art work every where. It has been a painful process dealing with the Port Authority on the Twin Tower location but progress is being made there on the rebuild as well. God Bless the families that lost loved ones and the Hero's that are still with us.

As I reflect on this day I am grateful for my beautiful family and the happy and magnificent place that I work at.

The poll question was almost a landslide, 90% of the people were correct that Danny is in Second Grade, and lovin it. Josh and Terrence started Nursery School this week and after a rough start Josh is still going and Terrence would go every day.

No Rooms Available

What a summer we have had! The No has been out on the sign almost every day. And September is already 93% full with reservations. There is more room open in October if you would still like to come visit.

Some weird things have been happening too. Matt had a gentleman ask where the closest hardware store was. Matt asked what he needed, and he said he needed to fix his leg! He had a prosthesis that had broken. So, Matt fixed it for him! One of our regular guests said "Well you guys really do it all!" And I had an egg casserole blow up in the oven---what a mess. So, I spent 2 hours in the 90 degree heat cleaning that up! Now, we have guests here for 2 separate weddings with the Hurricane Earl predicted to pass by. Actually, it looks like it will miss us. I will let you know.

School has started back up. One of the long term morning news broadcasters said "I can't remember ever broadcasting that schools in Maine were closed due to the heat." We had a 4 day heat wave this past week that was very uncomfortable. I cannot ever remember Bailey Island being hot for this many days. It should cool down after the storm passes by.

Just a little leak

Sue isn't headed off to the Plant Store today but I think that is only because it hasn't stopped raining in 24hrs. We needed the rain though, it has been a fairly dry Summer. I hope everyone enjoyed the basil photo. Sue planted it in the vegetable garden and I use it all the time. I think it will last until we close or first frost.

I was just looking at the Reservation Book and we do not have a whole weekend available until October 15th. I know I shouldn't be surprised by this right??? but I have also never seen September so full before it even starts. We already have 231 nights booked for next year. Those August guests do not like to take a chance that their room is going to be taken.

One day last week Sue and I were looking at flower photo's in the office when Emily said "You better come quick there is water pouring out of the back of the kitchen ceiling." There is nothing like water to make 2 people start running. It is always trying to find the source at 9am with a Full House that is fun. We called Plumber Matt and traced it to a closet behind the bathroom in the York Room. Ironically the gentleman staying in the York Room was a plumbing contractor. So now the guests do dishes, move furniture and fix our plumbing.

This is our last Friday with the kids at Stover's Cove and we are going all out with a full Lobster Bake and Grill set up. It is hard to believe it is back to school time but what a great Summer we have had.

By a narrow margin more people thought I was making Blueberry Pie which would have been true of the rest of the Summer but that day I decided to make Apple so Apple people win.

Plant shopping

Okay, okay, okay.......yes, I do like to plant shop.....and Alicia likes to mock this "habit" I have. But, as you can see in the picture, she was excited about the giant basil plant I brought back yesterday! One thing about plant shopping this time of year is there are deals out there.

We have been 100% full so far in August. Actually, we could have rented 2-3 times the rooms we have. September looks very busy as well. We are launching a new web site this week. Our web designer is coming to train Matt and Aimee today. So be on the lookout!

Bon Apetit

I think Sue is on a quest this year to look through cooking magazine's and find the hardest recipes that she likes and wants me to make. This week the mouth watering picture in Bon Apetit of a lime curd tart with fresh blackberries and blueberries was her choice. This was worse than making the Ice Cream. It took me a day to make the lime curd and another day to assemble the whole thing. It may not look exactly like the picture in the magazine but I think it is pretty close.

My other picture is of our room guest Mr. Kasper moving the blow up bed from one of their rooms to another.So not only do our room guests do the dishes but they also move furniture and he and his wife bring us each the most wonderful box of chocolates.

The Lobster Bake Fundraiser at the Post Office was a great success. I am just happy that people actually bid on my Blueberry Pie. It was great to see some of our Room Guests there showing support for the Community.
Two more weeks and the local kids are back in School. This has been the best Summer for weather by far. I have never been to the beach so many times. Speaking of the beach the majority of you were right on my poll. There is controversary surrounding the access to Cedar Beach. The property has always been privatly owned and the people were gracious enough to let the public use it. Now they would like to sell the Right of Way to the Town and this is where the "Legality" of the situation arises. You can still access the path to the beach but have to use the larger beach to the Right of Cedar.

I am off on a Family trip to Northern Maine, Mooshead Lake this weekend and hope this is not the one weekend all Summer that it decides to rain.

August on Bailey Island

Here is a picture of Aimee and Alicia at the Library Hall pancake breakfast. It was a fundraiser for the Save the Bailey Island Post Office. I am happy to say they raised $3000!! That is very good, as Aimee and Alicia flipped pancakes non-stop from 7am-10:30! Everyone said it was great.....what do you expect when you get the Log Cabin crew to do the cooking????

It is very busy here at the Inn....we could rent 20 rooms/night. There are people everywhere on the island. The weather is perfect--I do not remember a better summer for weather. I can't quite believe we are going into the 2nd week of August.

Next weekend, there is a Lobster Bake for the Post Office on Sunday from 4-8. I am sure that will be busy as well.

I must go cook breakfast. Sue

So much has been going on lately, that it is hard to believe this is the last day of July. The Harpswell Festival was fantastic despite the foggy Fireworks. The next day the Lobster Boat Races had the best weather ever. This year they changed venue to Mitchell Field and it gave so many more people a chance to view from shore.

One of the Room Guests suggested that I should take Terrence to White's Beach in Brunswick, just off the Durham Road, so off we went. It is also a Campground, they have a lunch shack, Bathrooms, Showers and most importantly to Terrence a slide. It was very clean and I recommend it to anyone else coming this Summer. Today is also the last day of the 72nd Bailey Island Tuna Tournament. When Matt is not at work he and the boys are off looking for that Giant Mackerel or Striped Bass. Another treat this week is that Sue took Danny and Josh on the Casco Bay Ferry that leaves from Cooks Lobster House on a 2hr tour of Casco Bay, she said it was great.

A real boost to us locally is that Kestrel Air announced that it has signed a 10 year lease on the largest Hanger at the Navy Base. They plan to launch a $100 Million Dollar airplane production project. At full swing it will produce 300 jobs in Brunswick.

A Big Thank You to Corey and Lenny Schultz for this Beautiful Wind Chime that Lenny made. The lucky people who stay in the Wiseman Room can enjoy its beauty. Also in the above photo is our room guests the Lewis' enjoying their 12 day stay, some guests are just comfortable in the Kitchen cleaning their own dishes.

Aimee and I will be flipping Blueberry Pancakes tomorrow at a Fundraiser to " Save the Bailey Island Post Office". I am not sure our pancakes are going to save it but now we can say we did our Civic Duty.

We hope that August continues to bring us the fabulous weather that July has. Maybe that is why our July occupancy was higher than last year, I tend to think it is because we are so nice.

Summer in the Pool

What a summer it has been for the pool. In this picture is Alicia's Mom, son and nieces. Actually, many people are swimming in the ocean as well! I have only made it up to my waist. This is a summer like I cannot remember. I am sure it will go down in the record books as one of the hottest. We have had tons of sun and just enough rain to keep the lawn green. The gardens are quite spectacular too!!

Just finishing up with breakfast (the other photo is when we were prepping this am). I am happy to be working with my lovely daughter in law, Aimee. Everyone came at the same time and she pulled it off flawlessly!

Fundraiser

Our Renewal of Vows Ceremony last Sunday for Marcia and Dave was fantastic. Despite the rain they had lots of family, friends from out of State, and present and past room guests. I was so pleased to share in their joy. They were also one of the first people of the season to get "flocked" by those pesky Flamingo's.

This Sunday at Library Hall will be a Fundraiser, Silent Auction and Spaghetti Dinner for a long time Island Resident, Leo Coombs and his family. Leo has been battling Cancer for years. He was raised on the Islands and his family has lived and done business here for generations. Sue was generous enough to donate the ingredients for the sauce as you see the girls making in the kitchen. There will also be a Silent Auction with so many items including a night stay at the Log Cabin. There is going to be Live Music and activities for the kids. It is amazing what the Town can do when we pull together to help our own.

Next Saturday, the 24th is the Harpswell Festival at Mitchell Field. This is a show not to miss. Lots of food, crafts, a parade, dancing, kids section all topped off with a band called Motor Booty that is just my Favorite of all times. I wanted them to play at my Wedding. Come 9pm the Fireworks will be going off just like 4th of July. That is not the end of it, on Sunday there will be another Shindig accompanied by the famous Lobster Boat Races. To let you in on a little secret we had a cancellation in the Mt. Washington Room for the weekend so that is available with its brand new King Size Bed.

I just spent 2 1/2 hrs unpacking our shipment of new mugs, 300 mugs with some brand new colors. While I was doing that I had some Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup Ice Cream going in the mixer and then made Strawberry Rhubarb Pie, Yum.

The weather has been fabulous and great for swimmimg in the pool, 88 deg but don't tell Matt, he will turn it down.

Here are a couple pictures of a gorgeous lily. Unless I miscounted, there are 104 blossoms on that one plant!!! There are many, many more gardens. Which brings me to the poll question that Alicia posted last week....how much $$ do I spend on flowers. My husband, Neal, has also asked me that in the past. The answer.....it is a secret!! Just like you don't ask people their age or how much they weigh.....how much I spend is a BIG secret. Actually, I don't even know. I go to the garden center so many times I don't even want to know. I will admit, I am a floweraholic.

That being said, two of our favorite guests, Dave and Marcia, are renewing their vows here on Sunday. Alicia is officiating (she is multi-talented). The weather does not sound great, but I am sure the party will be. We will post pictures.

I am finding it hard to believe that this coming weekend is 4th of July. There is a lot of local activity. In Bath they have Heritage Days that starts on July 2-5th. Bath has their Fireworks on the 5th. Freeport and Portland are having them on the 4th. On Bailey Island we have the Fireworks on the 5th of July at Cooks Lobster House. It is a great view from any deck at the Log Cabin.

A great day trip this weekend would be at the Owls Head Transportation Museum. It is just down the road from Rockland. On Sat and Sun they are having the Fabulous 50's, Sensational 60's Car meet Antique Airplane Show. They are having operational WW 1 planes flying each morning. There is also a kids area where kids drive mi nature versions of their favorite cars and planes around the coral area. The kids will also decorate their own bikes and have a parade each day. A live band will also play each day from 12:30-3.

Aimee and Matt's oldest son Danny is celebrating his 7th Birthday on Friday so a Big Happy Birthday to Danny. Our Crop Share at the Farm is so much fun, the bonus item this week was fresh snow peas ( that Sue had to actually pick), and a kohlrabi was added to all our other greens. I made a yummy Lobster Newburg and made a Cashew, Chocolate Chunk Ice Cream. A Big Thank You to Curt and Cathleen for bringing the ingredients. Thank You Doreen for our Chocolate, Peanut Butter Bon Bons.

Don't forget you can go to the Kayaking School at the bridge or bring your own and launch them in several different places. Which brings me to my photo above of our regular Room Guests Penny and Richard enjoying a cruise right by Sue's house.

Last weeks Blog I actually had to go back and change the answers before I posted it because at the last minute I remembered that the Driftwood Inn serves to the public as well as the General Store, Giant Staircase and Cooks. So only 40% of the people guessed 4 places.

After the wedding

Well, we made it through the wedding, and all the worry was worth it! Weather was perfect, tent looked super, Deb was beautiful as usual, Ray was very happy. It took me a couple days to recover, but starting to feel like normal again. Ray even rented a bus like out of "The Graduate" to pick them up from the church. Deb was very surprised.

So, all in all, it was a picture perfect wedding. Many comments were made as to the fact that we should do weddings........the answer is NO!! Well, an exception will be made if my son Adam gets married and would like to have it here.

Happy Father's Day

So much is going on this week it is a great time to be in Maine. Our School's have just got out this week so the kiddo's are around. Next year Danny will be in 2nd Grade and Josh and Terrence will be at the same Nursery School. Above photo is our first Summer trip to Stovers Cove. Left to Right in photo Danny, Terrence and Josh.

We have the Wedding going on at the Inn so life here has been hectic. I have been working for Sue for 11 years and this is the first time I have seen a tent on the lawn and I am sure besides her other son Adam's, Wedding it will be the last time.

The Taste of Brunswick is this weekend on Maine St. Thirty local Restaurants will be there passing out food. Saturday is free admission at the Maritime Museum for Mariner's Day. They also have the Tall Ship the "Bowdoin" there with free tours. The Bowdoin is the training Ship for the Maine Maritime Academy. The Maine State Music Theatre also opened this week with Patsy Cline. I already have my tickets for "Spamalot" and can not wait.

A little update on the Bridge Construction. It looks like the resurfacing on the North Side is almost done including the guard rails. The South Side looks like it needs some more work. It is scheduled to open by the end of Sept and they say they are on schedule but I don't see it happening.

The gardens are so beautiful right now. The sun, rain and Sue have done their job well. The Vegetable garden even looks like it is getting some action. I did pick up our Crop Share at Crystal Spring Farm today to hold us over til we get some real action. The baby bok choy are so cute.

Happy Father's Day to all those awesome Fathers out there. In between my shifts I am going to be cooking up some Organic Boneless Leg of Lamb on the Grill, Yum.

Gardens and Wedding

Here is a picture of the yellow rose bush that is right outside of the office window. It has at least 100 buds on it! Well, this is a hectic week here at the Inn. a week from today my best friend since age 10 is getting married and we are doing the reception here. And NO, we do not do weddings!! This is a special exception. And, I know why, as it is keeping me awake at night with all the details. And I am the matron of honor, so I will probably look exhausted! Oh well, it is about Deb and Ray, not me.

So, needless to say, I am frantic about the yard and preparations. And hoping with all my heart for a sunny day! It will be a great day regardless. They were high school sweethearts, and now at age 60 are getting married (well, Ray is 60--Deb and I soon to be).

So, if anyone has any connections with Mother Nature, put in a request for sun on the 19th please!

New Visitors Center

Sue thinks I exaggerate with her Love for plants. As you can see her plants have taken over the entire dish area,where we unload our heavy trays from the Dining Room. From Landscape Fabric to bulbs and plants that are just waiting for her lovely green thumb. I guess there could be worse things to be addicted to then flowers.

There is a Visitors Center that has just opened at the New Train Depot on Maine Street, Brunswick. It is so nice to have the depot there with the Bowdoin College Book Store and Gift Shop along with 2 Restaurants. I just found a new website www.mainethingstodo.com it is 101 Things to do in Vacationland. Even our regular guests could probably find a few things they have not done yet and it is family friendly as well.

One of the local golf courses "Mere Creek" was scheduled to close this season as it is located on the Brunswick Navy Base which is being disarmed. A group has gotten together and has saved it for this year at least. One could also golf locally in Brunswick,Topsham, Bath and Freeport.

The Maine Turnpike Authority has reported that traveling was up 5% over last Memorial Day Weekend. They should start checking the docks. There are over 70 Cruise Ships due to dock in Portland this Summer and Fall, the most ever.

If you are lucky enough to be in Harpswell this weekend you could take part in the Harpswell Hiking Challenge. This self guided challenge has participants hiking all 6.5 miles of trails. The Town includes 15 public access properties with walking trails, all with a portion along the waterfront. They range from the wheel chair accessible loop at Mitchell Field to the challenging Cliff Trail. Check it out at www.harpswell.maine.gov

It looks like Sue does not know how to access the Viewers Poll or to give you the answers. Most of the time Matt keeps the pool temp at 82 deg, last week when we had our 91 deg day it was 88 deg. Sometimes we sneak in and raise the temp on him. The most amount of people ever answered my poll and 42% got it right.

Above is my Special for tonight, Lemon and Lobster Linguini with Feta, the guests said it was Delicious and I agree as I saved some for Sue and I.

Memorial Day Weekend

Wow, it is Memorial Day Weekend.....we have been open for almost 2 months. It does not seem possible. As you can see, the gardens are very happy.....poppies, iris and lupine time. I will go pick a bouquet when I finish up this blog.

The weather continues to be fantastic. Bailey Island is very busy. Bowdoin College has their graduation this weekend, which brings many people this way. And of course, it is a 3 day weekend for most folks (unless you are in the Inn business).

HMS Bounty

Last one in the pool is a Rotten Egg. I think since the heat isn't on yet I will refrain, but the pool is open. The weather has been very cooperative, some sun, some rain and some sun. The flowers are just bursting with Thank You's. Aimee the boys and I took the first trip of the Summer to Stover's Cove this week. We did some beach walking, crab catching and chasing of boys in and out of the water. There was quite a bit or road erosion there this Winter and one of the cottages was washed away. The road is passable and it is always neat to look at Bailey Island from the other side of Harpswell.

Also in the area this weekend is the HMS Bounty at the Maine Maritime Museum. This is the replica ship built by MGM Studios in 1961 to serve in the film "Mutiny on the Bounty".It was made 1/3 larger to accommodate the film crews. There is always something interesting at the Museum and since Bath was named one of the Top 10 Small Towns in America it is a great day trip from the Inn.

I am giving the "Crazy Guest Award" so far this year to Bob and Betsy. They saw my blog about the Strawberry Rhubarb Pie and drove all the way here from MA and back in the same day just to get one of my pies.I hope it was good guys, and see you in September. I made something else new this week. Rhubarb and Crystallized Ginger Bread Pudding, seems to be a hit. I am back on track with our new freezer and this week I made Butter Pecan Ice Cream. Thanks to room guests Curt and Kathleen for bringing us those fresh nuts. Busy, busy time at the Inn, next weekend Memorial Day and Bowdoin College Graduation. Emily has Graduated Cum Laude and we are so glad to have her back with us.

It is so exciting for us to start seeing all our regular guests back again. Come stay with us and you will become a regular guest, I promise.

Tulip gardens

The tulips were spectacular this year! They apparently liked the mild winter. They are just starting to go by--soon to be followed by the iris--and there are many of those as well. I have only made 3 trips to the garden centers.....planted the window boxes on the shed and garage so far. I will start on the raised gardens today and work my way around the building.

We are full with a wedding party this weekend. Sarah, one of our former employees is getting married in Mackerel Cove and her family is staying with us. The weather forecast is looking pretty good--we are keeping our fingers crossed for Sarah and Adam. Alicia is performing the ceremony. Matt, Aimee and kids are going to the wedding.....so is Laura. So, I guess that means I will hold down the fort!

From Start to Finish

Hi All... it's Alicia and it looks like gardening season has begun so Sue is abandoning the blog and I am back. As you can see I had a little helper today as the first Strawberry Rhubarb Pie of the season has been made. I had to hurry up and make something as we have 16 of 18 possible people for Dinner tonight. Lots of Lobster and Filet's will be flying around the Kitchen tonight.

We had a fabulous April, occupancy was up 30% from last year. We rented the Harpswell Room, the largest and most expensive, 90% of the month. As it stands our first Sat night opening for any room is June 26th. People are so excited to stay here we even have 47 rooms nights already booked for 2011. So if you are a procrastinator and want to stay here you may be out of luck.

Lots of new Restaurants opening on Maine St. in Brunswick. I sent some room guests to the Byrnes Irish Pub,last night, they had a great time and said there was even Live Music. We are taking a "Field Trip" this week to the newly restored Captain Daniel Stone Inn and Restaurant in Brunswick. Then over to the Quahog Bay Inn off Rt 24 in Harpswell, so there will be much to report next week. Now I must head to the kitchen and tackle Dinner.

Here was today's breakfast.....a Laura creation. She made lobster eggs benedict in a puff pastry, with roasted potatoes on the side. Two of our favorite regular guests are here with us for 2 weeks, so we attempt to create some new and different breakfasts so they will not be bored! Lobster of course is a Maine tradition. This year is also looking to be a tough year for the lobster industry. So, we will do our part to support the lobster men and women.

April has turned out to be a very good month for weather. Today it is raining and chilly, but the forecast for the weekend is good. Our occupancy for the month is 28% better than last year. Yahoo!! So, if you are planning on coming to Bailey Island for a visit, give us a call!

No rooms available!

One of our favorite things to do is to hang out the "NO" on the rooms available sign. Alicia was the first to get that honor last night. It was a beautiful Saturday here and we filled for the first time this month. April has been considerably busier than last year. Of course, the weather has also been really nice. The gardens are 3-4 weeks ahead of usual. It is hard to see in the picture, but the magnolia is budding, the tulips are out, all the trees have buds. It is a great spring so far.

It is early Sunday morning, and I am off to the kitchen to make breakfast....cinnamon rolls, ham and oven omelette. Alicia will be in soon to make the fruit and coffee. It is looking like another beautiful sunny day. Hope you all enjoy!

30th Year Celebration

Now that was a party! We had present guests, past guests, neighbors, current employees, past employees, and many friends and neighbors attend. I tried to write down everyone that was here....I am guessing around 150 +/-. It was a sunny day, so those who have never actually stayed with us could tour some rooms and grounds. We had lots of snacks and drinks. We had a great band....Midweek Jazz....they were excellent! We had a great photographer, Christopher O'Donnell.....highly recommend Chris as well as the band.

We are so lucky to have this wonderful Inn on this wonderful island. The large turnout at the party is a tribute to the Log Cabin and our crew. Everyone that was here is like the extended Log Cabin family. And I heard from many other friends and guests that would have loved to be here as well. I thank everyone from the bottom of my heart for supporting us for the past 30 years. Here is to another 30!

Back in the swing!

Just completed our first week open....Here is a picture of this mornings breakfast....waffles, ham, apple puff pastry and a fruit cup. Cooking for 4 rooms this morning, which is good for a Friday am in early April. We have most of the "kinks" worked out....new back door and screen on, new garage door on, gardens all spiffed up, baking done. Our only new problem is one of our freezers died, so we have to replace that. I was trying to tell my husband it was "new", but he said it was "old"...one season blends into another.

Big celebration tomorrow--our 30th Year Celebration. Now, I really cannot believe it has been 30 years. 15 as a restaurant, and 15 as an Inn. Let me tell you, the last 15 have been the best. We have the most amazing guests, and we thoroughly enjoy being part of their lives. They have enriched ours, and hopefully, we do the same for them. So, if you are out and about tomorrow.....stop in from 2-5 to say hi!

30th Year!

I am so excited about this year, I could not sleep last night! Wouldn't you think after 30 years, opening day would not cause insomnia? I guess part of the excitement is that it is the 30th year. Another part is that we have so many advance reservations. Another is that I get to work with the world's greatest crew! And, of course there are the guests......we have the nicest group of guests that you can imagine.

The Inn looks beautiful....Matt and Aimee have been very busy fixing and cleaning all winter. And the weather is perfect. We have never opened with such a good forecast.

Well, I better get back to work...we do have some last minute things to complete.

Final week til our 30th season!

So, we are on our last week to finish up "tasks" before we open.....as you can see, Aimee has set up the dining room, and gift shop, and is finishing the ladies and mens rooms. Matt has installed a new vanity in the York room, all sorts of other plumbing issues....(he hates plumbing).....installed some new flooring, a new cooktop in the kitchen, etc. etc. etc. It goes on and on. Oh, and Matt bought a couple new tvs too.

I have been busily taking reservations and doing confirmations. We are off to a good start even before we open. This week we order our food, soda, beer and wine. I went to the New England Gift Show a week ago, and I am pondering what new items to purchase for the gift shop.

Oh, and I have been busy figuring out our "30th Year Anniversary Party". It will be April 10th from 2-5 and all are welcome. We will have a local jazz group playing, some food and drink, and hope to see many of you! We have 3 rooms left if you would like to spend the night. But, if not, please drop in and help us celebrate. We are so very excited about the 30th year, and so very grateful to all that have helped us make it to 30 years.

Finishing touches

So, we are winding down with our "renovation" list.....here are a couple shots of new chairs in the Sunset room (they look out a picture window at the ocean).....and the York sitting room (Aimee rearranged and got a new rug and chair). It is fitting that Aimee redid the York room, as her and Matt's last name is York (we named the room for Matt and his brother). And, a picture of the crocus in front of the Casco Bay room. There are yellow ones in bloom in a different garden also.

I could have taken a picture of the "new" ladies and mens rooms--but Matt thought that was silly. It really is quite exciting, as the last time we re-did those was the first year of the Inn. I say "we", but Aimee painted and wallpapered 15 years ago, and she did them this year too! I do like to take credit for other peoples work!

Our "garden angels", Wanda and Inez have been hard at work too. I just cannot believe it is still winter, and the plants are growing. There have been years in the past that we are chipping ice off the walkways before we open. Of course, there is a possibility of a winter storm this year too.....No, that won't happen!

I am still busy with reservations and phone calls. I am also working on our 30th celebration on April 10th. Where did the years go?

Three bridges to Bailey Island

Many people ask if they have to take a ferry to Bailey Island. The answer is no. Here are three shots taken today from the three bridges that lead to Bailey Island. The first is from the Bailey Island bridge, the second from the Orr's Island bridge, and the last from the Great Island bridge. We are located 13 miles from Cooks Corner in Brunswick, Maine. The drive is very beautiful with many, many scenic spots.

The weather has been spectacular this week, sunny and warm. We have no snow at all. Actually, the magnolia is budding, tulips are up a couple inches, perennials are starting to grow. I would say the gardens will be early this year. For those of you who have been to the Log Cabin, you know we love our gardens!

Some very good news for Maine Street Brunswick was in last nights paper. The very large space vacated by Grand City has been purchased, with plans to put shops in it and hopefully reopen the restaurant. This will be wonderful. Downtown Brunswick is a very pleasant town....many restaurants, art galleries and shops.

Yesterday the people of Harpswell voted to keep both elementary schools open. There has been a lot of controversy over this vote, and the vote was close. Over 1700 people voted. So, for at least one more year, we will have two elementary schools in our town.

We open in 23 days. The Inn is looking very happy with all of Matt and Aimees hard work. Remember, we are having a 30 year celebration on April 10th from 2-5 pm, with music and food. Hope you all will stop in to help us celebrate!

Really Bad Storm

Countdown to opening day

Well, 29 days until we open. Here is a picture of Aimee, my daughter-in-law who I have written about for those of you who have not met her (and her dog Daisy). I have also told this story a thousand times....so, if you have heard it, stop reading.

15 years ago, Matt, Aimee and I were working when the Log Cabin was just a restaurant. I was cooking, Aimee was waitressing, and Matt was bartending. It was a very busy night and we were all tired. As Aimee left the kitchen with a tray on her shoulder she looked back at me and said "I don't know if I can keep this up". I looked at her, dumbfounded, wondering why would she say that.....she is 20 years younger than I am!

I have also said this a thousand times.....Aimee is smarter, prettier, and more ambitious than I am. Smarter is the operative word here. I had done restaurant work since I was 13, and was not smart enough to think I should do something else!!!! Those words that Aimee said that night was the best thing that ever happened to the Log Cabin. I did not want to run the place without my family. Thus, we transformed the restaurant into an Inn. And, we all love it.

So, thank you Aimee....for being so much smarter than your old mother-in law!

Happy March!

Happy first day of March everyone! I love this month, as we open either the last weekend of March or first weekend in April--the first of April this year. We are going into the 15th year as an Inn and the 30th year of the Log Cabin. Very exciting. I am still having problems with my computer, and cannot upload pictures for some reason. (Maybe Alicia will do it again from Florida). Anyhow, it has been very stormy here. We had a huge wind and rain storm last week. We lost power from Thursday to Sunday. So, if you called the Inn and did not get an answer, that is why. We are back up and running now. I took advantage of the storm, and my new Flip camera and took a video of the area. I would insert the link here if I could.......Anyhow, if you go to You Tube and type "Really bad weathah" in the search you can see it. It is very windy today as well. No snow though..... Progress on Bailey Island

Okay.........I cannot believe I finally figured out how to put a video on the blog!! That is a good thing, as I cannot get the pictures I took to upload. Now, I do have a new CPU and a new Kodak program.....but, I cannot honestly say that is the problem. I have a severe problem when it comes to anything technical.....DVD players, fax machines, copiers etc. etc. So, for that reason, you are looking at my video of my lab, Ebby, on the couch. She was my test run for the video!! You can tell she was excited to be featured!

I did go take pictures this morning of the bridge progress, and the new siding on the Log Cabin, and a shot of Mackeral Cove with no snow......it is another sunny and warm day here on the Island. Snow is predicted for tomorrow....we will see. Good chance that we will just get rain here on the shore.

Well, we open in 45 days!! Reservations are pouring in....hope to see all of you!

Hi Everyone... Just wanted you to know Sue is not all that clever. She blew up the video and couldn't post the photo's so here I am in Florida posting the photo's for her. She is on her own for the video. It has been a fairly cold Winter here but not like the cold of the North and the snow of the DC area. Terrence and I are headed home on April 7th just in time for the Big Anniversary Party on the 10th.
